Yao Nian blinked her eyes and said, "It's because Brother Zhe Yuan looks so light; it feels like I can't call him 'uncle'."
"Hey!" Ji Zhe Yuan immediately showed a proud smile and patted Shen Du on the shoulder. "That's right! I do look much lighter than you!"
Shen Du was at a loss for words as he looked at him. "What are you doing here at this hour?"
Ji Zhe Yuan shook the car keys in his hand. "I just realized I left my keys in the parking lot. I saw your office light was on and thought you forgot to turn it off."
Shen Du quickly turned off the light with a snap. "It's off now."
"Hey, hey, hey!" Ji Zhe Yuan called out from behind. "Where are you guys going?"
"Taking the little girl back to school."
Ji Zhe Yuan shouted again, "Little sister, remember to come over and play when you have time!"
Yao Nian turned back and waved at him. "Goodbye, Brother Zhe Yuan."
On the way back to school, Yao Nian sat in the passenger seat, occasionally lifting her wrist to admire her watch.
She had received many gifts since she was young—Qiao Shuzhen bought her beautiful dresses, Yao Zhandong never missed giving her red envelopes during celebrations, Xu Jiayi gifted her all sorts of quirky figurines, and there was even that bouquet of chrysanthemums from Zhou Shiyi.
At this moment, the watch on her wrist was not just a gift; it represented Shen Du pouring his time and effort into something tangible for her. It was a special memory that belonged to both of them.
She would cherish it well.
With twenty minutes left before curfew, Shen Du parked steadily at the entrance of Huada.
"Wait!" he called out, reaching back to grab a few books from the back seat. "Aren't you going to take your books?"
Yao Nian quickly jogged back to the car.
Shen Du glanced at the books in his hand with some surprise. "You're reading these books already in your freshman year?"
"I'm just browsing," Yao Nian scratched her head. "I find the case studies inside quite interesting."
Shen Du handed the books back to her. "These are pretty basic; if you're interested, I can compile some more recent cases for you."
Yao Nian tilted her head. "Is this considered giving me special treatment?"
Shen Du smiled slightly. "There's no harm in reading more."
He watched as the girl's figure disappeared through the Huada entrance before restarting the car.
Just after passing through a traffic light, Ji Zhe Yuan's call came through again.
"Have you safely sent our sister to school?"
Shen Du glanced at the rearview mirror, changing the subject. "Where are you right now? Are you considering treating me to a late-night snack?"
"Aren't you going to accompany Xiaolin?"
"She went back to Nancheng and will be there for a few days."
Shen Du thought about how he didn't have anything particularly important tomorrow morning. "Alright, you choose the place."
The old street's Neighbor Beef Bone restaurant was bustling at this hour. The place was already packed, and the owner had set up at least ten tables outside. Shen Du quickly spotted Ji Zheyuan, who was gnawing on a beef bone while wearing disposable plastic gloves.
They often came to this restaurant. Although the environment was quite ordinary, the food was genuinely good, especially the owner's secret chive flower sauce. Since the owner refused to sell the sauce separately, Ji Zheyuan even joked about stealing the recipe.
The little girl loved spicy food; maybe he could bring her here next time to try it.
"You’re so slow," Ji Zheyuan looked up at him. "If I weren't waiting for you to settle the bill, I wouldn't have saved these two bones for you."
"You finished everything, didn't you?" Shen Du sat down across from him and ordered a glass of water from the waiter.
"What do you need water for?" Ji Zheyuan pushed the cap off a beer bottle with his chopsticks, sending it flying with a pop before handing the bottle to Shen Du.
Shen Du didn’t take it; he was driving.
"Just get a designated driver," Ji Zheyuan paused for a moment. "Oh right, I forgot. You're such a fuss."
Shen Du smiled but said nothing.
