"I'm sensitive?" Li Rufen glared at her. "Lin Mo, stop pointing fingers at me. Why are you always clinging to Yao Nian? Isn’t it just because her family is rich?"
Fang Yi, who usually had a good temper, couldn't hold back upon hearing this. "That's too much!"
"And you, Fang Yi," Li Rufen pointed at her. "What are you pretending to be cute for? You’re always talking about your boyfriend. Did you come to Huada just to date? I get annoyed every time I hear you on the phone!"
Yao Nian looked at her coldly.
"Stop giving me that look," Li Rufen nearly shouted. "Yao Nian, you're the one I hate the most!"
She yanked open the drawer and threw the sunscreen Yao Nian had given her onto the floor.
"What gives you the right to live so comfortably? Every weekend, you go out and have fun, eating good food and shopping with bags full of stuff. What about me? I work hard on weekends just to make ends meet, and it’s not even enough for you to casually give away a bottle of sunscreen!"
Yao Nian had never felt such intense malice before; even a gift could be twisted like this.
Li Rufen stared at her fiercely. "You three just look down on me! You’re all ganging up to isolate me!"
"Isolate you?" Yao Nian narrowed her eyes. "Count how many times we went out to eat without inviting you. We’ve asked you out several times on weekends; did you ever respond? The last few times when they checked the dorm, you weren’t there, and it was Yi who covered for you. You can choose not to appreciate it, but don’t be so heartless!"
"Do you know why I came back so late?" Li Rufen's eyes were red, her voice choked with emotion. "Because my shift at the grilled fish restaurant ends at eleven! I’m just trying to earn that extra eighty bucks! You all live so happily, looking down on others just because your families are wealthy! Do you know how hard my life is? I don’t even have next month’s living expenses sorted out!"
"Xiao Fen," Fang Yi furrowed her brows. "If you're short on money, just tell us. We can all find a way to help."
"I don’t want your pity!" Li Rufen shouted. "I don’t need you feeling sorry for me!"
"So," Yao Nian looked at her, raising her voice bit by bit, "is your hardship our fault? Are we supposed to be your punching bags?"
"Stop wasting your breath with her!" Lin Mo couldn’t take it anymore. "Didn’t you say I stole something? Then just call the police! If I stole something, I'll bring my own handcuffs; I won’t bother the police!"
Li Rufen shot her a fierce glare before turning and running out of the dorm.
Yao Nian shouted, "Call the counselor!" and immediately chased after her.
Li Rufen ran fast; by the time Yao Nian got outside, she saw Li Rufen’s figure disappearing around the corner of the stairs, heading upwards.
A sense of foreboding washed over her, and her breathing quickened as she shouted, "She’s going to the rooftop!"
Lin Mo had just dialed the number and exchanged a glance with Fang Yi.
In the next moment, both of them dashed out of the dorm.
Yao Nian was wearing flip-flops; in her haste up the stairs, one of them fell off. But she didn’t have time to pick it up—fearing that Li Rufen might do something reckless in a moment of impulse, she kicked off the other one as well.
Just as Li Rufen burst through the rooftop door, Yao Nian reacted swiftly, grabbing her wrist with a firm grip.
"Don't touch me! Let go of me!" Li Rufen screamed, her voice hoarse with emotion.
In that moment, she was overwhelmed with agitation, struggling fiercely to push forward. The force of her struggle caught Yao Nian off guard, causing her to lose her footing on a step. A sharp pain shot through her left ankle, and she stumbled, nearly losing her balance.
Yet, Yao Nian did not release her hold; instead, she pulled Li Rufen closer and wrapped her arms around her in a tight embrace.
