Lin Mo laughed for a long time before yawning. "Hurry up with your movements; I was nearly worn out from last night."
Yao Nian was applying cream to her face, saying, "If you're tired, just go to sleep."
Lin Mo rolled her eyes. "I have to get you ready first; otherwise, how will you sleep tonight?" She almost forgot that she was currently limping.
"Lin Mo," Yao Nian paused her actions and looked at her. "Thank you."
The next day, Li Rufen did not return.
On the third day, Li Rufen still had not come back.
On the fourth day, Li Rufen was still absent, but the instructor arrived, bringing along a camera and Fang Yiran's headphones.
The instructor spoke seriously. "I came to ask for your opinions. Whether or not to pursue this matter and how to do so is entirely up to you. However, I can tell you in advance that the school will definitely impose a penalty, and this time the amount is quite significant."
She glanced at Yao Nian, particularly at her camera and the injury on her foot. "You can pursue compensation for those."
"Does that mean she admits to taking them?" Yao Nian asked.
The instructor nodded helplessly. "You've probably heard about her situation. Her family isn't well-off; she has a younger brother, and her mother suffers from a chronic illness that requires regular hospital treatment, which is expensive. Her father doesn't have a stable job. You might feel there's a huge disparity between your lives, which could have twisted her mindset."
"That doesn't justify taking someone else's belongings," Lin Mo interjected.
She sighed. "That's why I'm here to seek your opinions."
"I'm not planning to pursue it," Yao Nian said. "Not because I feel sorry for her, but I don't want to waste our time and energy on this matter anymore."
Fang Yiran agreed as well. "Since the items have been returned, let's just let it go."
Lin Mo looked at the instructor. "We definitely can't share a dorm anymore. You've seen Yao Nian's foot; if she reacts in any way again, we can't bear the consequences."
"Don't worry," the instructor replied. "The school has advised Li Rufen to apply for a leave of absence."
When Li Rufen returned to pack her things, it seemed she had specifically chosen a time when they were all in class.
She didn't expect Yao Nian to be in the dormitory.
As she entered the room, she saw Yao Nian struggling to move down from the edge of the bed rail bit by bit.
Li Rufen immediately noticed the bandage on Yao Nian's foot.
She lowered her head and slowly walked to the bedside, reaching out to support her.
"Thank you."
After Yao Nian steadied herself, she said nothing and turned back to her desk to start packing her things.
Yao Nian limped into the bathroom, and when she came out, Li Rufen's desk was completely empty. The sheets and pillowcases were rolled up and placed on her nearly paintless yellow suitcase.
Seeing that everything was tidied up, Li Rufen stood in the middle of the room without moving, as if waiting for her.
Yao Nian cast a wary glance at her, then rushed to the balcony and pulled the glass door shut. After a moment's thought, she locked it as well.
"You’re not afraid?" Li Rufen suddenly spoke up. "I won’t do that kind of thing again."
Yao Nian remained silent, just looking at her.
Li Rufen's gaze dropped. "Your foot..."
"Yeah, thanks to you."
She took a deep breath, tightening her grip on the suitcase, and after a long pause, finally spoke again. "I’m sorry."
Yao Nian felt her legs giving way and sat down on a nearby chair, looking up at her. "You didn’t hurt me; you hurt yourself. Nothing is worth sacrificing your life over."
Li Rufen walked away.
Perhaps she really had been struggling or had unspeakable difficulties.
But none of that could justify hurting others.
