Seeing that Shen Du was silent, she moved her chair a little closer to him. "I'll keep you company then. You were there for me when I was upset before."
"That time you had a breakup?" Shen Du squinted his eyes.
Yao Nian choked for a moment, quickly denying it. "That wasn't really a breakup."
After a few seconds, Shen Du turned to look at her. "Do you still like that guy?"
"Yes," she answered without hesitation, but then quickly realized what she had said and lowered her voice. "Why are you asking this?"
"Just curious," he replied, his gaze downcast, revealing no emotion.
Then he asked, "So tell me about him. What kind of person is he?"
The flickering light of the campfire danced across his face, and Yao Nian's eyes darted away, feeling guilty. She didn't know how to answer that question.
Without knowing Shen Du's true feelings, she didn't dare to confess her own. She feared rejection and worried that even this chance to be together might slip away.
Perhaps it was because she felt inferior in front of him that she wanted to understand him slowly and draw closer to him over time. True courage might only arise when she was fairly certain he liked her back.
He was like someone who resembled the moon, Yao Nian thought after a moment of contemplation.
Shen Du raised his hand holding a branch, pausing in mid-air. "What kind of metaphor is that?"
Yao Nian gazed at the night sky, a smile gradually forming on her lips. The early morning sky seemed to be filled with dark ink, thick and deep without a hint of light. At this moment, the moon was right beside me.
Seeing that it was almost time, Shen Du moved the camping chair to the edge of the terrace extending from the mountaintop. The two of them sat side by side, quietly waiting for the sun to rise.
"Uncle Shen, have you ever seen a sunrise?"
Shen Du thought for a moment before answering, "During my sophomore summer vacation, I climbed Mount Emei with my roommate. But that day the clouds were too thick at the summit, so we couldn't see it."
"I haven't seen one either," Yao Nian yawned and then asked, "Have you seen 'Whisper of the Heart'?"
Before he could respond, she answered her own question. "It's an animated movie. You probably haven't seen it. I always remember the last scene where Shizuku rides her bike with Seiji up to the mountaintop to watch the sunrise."
"I've long decided I want to carry you over mountains and valleys like that."
"Because of you, I am willing to become a better person; I don't want to be a burden to you."
Hearing him clearly recite a line from the movie, Yao Nian was taken aback. "You've seen it?"
Shen Du raised an eyebrow. "Maybe I'm not as old as you think?"
"I'm not trying to attack your age," Yao Nian replied, propping her chin on her hand and pouting. "Ever since I watched that movie, I've wanted to see a sunrise. Xu Jiayi is a heavy sleeper, and don't even get me started on my parents. The last time our family of three went on a trip was back when I was in elementary school."
She rambled on for quite a while, and Shen Du listened attentively. However, her voice gradually became softer until the first rays of light began to spill over the mountain peak, and the sun slowly rose from the sea of clouds.
Shen Du felt a gentle weight settle on his shoulder, accompanied by the soft brush of hair against his skin, tickling slightly.
He turned his head to look; the young girl had fallen asleep at some point, her forehead resting against his shoulder, her breathing steady and gentle.
Morning light pierced through the mist like a phenomenon of Tyndall effect, parting the swirling clouds in the mountains.
Shen Du gazed at her peaceful profile as she slept. Her skin was so pale it seemed almost translucent, and her closed eyelashes curled slightly upward. The morning breeze caressed her face, causing a few strands of hair on her forehead to sway gently.
He subtly adjusted his posture to make her more comfortable.
The sea of clouds gradually unfurled as the sun rose inch by inch, until the orange-yellow light broke through the clouds and illuminated the entire sky.
With the rising sunlight, Shen Du's rationality slowly returned.
