As Ji Zheyuan drove to the mountaintop, Shen Du was dismantling the tent frame while Yao Nian squatted a short distance away, her back to him, poking the grass with a tree branch as if venting her frustrations.
He approached Shen Du and nodded toward Yao Nian. "What's going on? The atmosphere feels off."
Shen Du rolled up the tent fabric on the ground and followed his gaze, chuckling helplessly. "The young lady is throwing a tantrum."
"You upset her?" Ji Zheyuan asked.
"Sort of," Shen Du replied, brushing off his hands. "How's Xiaolin doing?"
"Don't even mention it. Acute gastroenteritis. She spent the night on an IV drip, and I came to pick you guys up right after dropping her off."
After saying that, he looked at Shen Du with suspicion. "Wait, why did you upset her?"
Shen Du couldn't help but laugh. "You should ask her yourself; she won't even talk to me right now."
Ji Zheyuan jogged over to Yao Nian, calling out, "Hey, little sister!"
Yao Nian looked up from the ground. "Zheyuan Ge?"
She brushed off her pants and stood up quickly. "Is Sister Xiaolin okay?"
"Nothing serious; she just went to sleep after finishing the saline drip," Ji Zheyuan reassured her.
Yao Nian stared at him in disbelief. "Did Shen Du bully you? Tell your brother; I'll help you teach him a lesson."
Mentioning this made Yao Nian a bit gloomy, and her tone rose slightly. "I missed the sunrise!"
When she opened her eyes that morning, she was shocked to find herself in the tent, lying on a sleeping bag with Shen Du's dark green jacket draped over her.
By the time she realized what had happened and rushed outside, it was already bright daylight.
Ji Zheyuan was taken aback. "Huh?"
Yao Nian shot a glance at Shen Du, her eyes filled with grievance. "I accidentally fell asleep this morning! Uncle Shen didn’t even wake me up! By the time I woke up, it was almost nine o'clock!"
"He fell asleep too?" Ji Zheyuan asked.
"No," Yao Nian replied coolly. "He watched the whole thing and even took pictures to show me! Now that I’m here, who wants to see pictures?"
Ji Zheyuan burst into laughter. "That's too much! He definitely did it on purpose!"
Yao Nian nodded angrily in agreement.
"Lawyer Shen," Ji Zheyuan approached Shen Du with a look of indignation as he led Yao Nian over. "What’s going on? Look at how you've wronged our little girl."
After Shen Du packed up the tent, he couldn't help but find her pouting expression utterly adorable, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his thin lips.
"Are you going to stand up for her?" he raised an eyebrow.
"Of course not," Ji Zheyuan replied with a displeased click of his tongue. "So we all came together, and you're the only one who gets to see the sunrise?"
Shen Du snatched the keys from Ji Zheyuan's hand and walked straight to the car. "Actually, I can walk alone now."
Yao Nian saw Shen Du wink at her and immediately followed him, lacking any backbone.
"What?"
Ji Zheyuan looked at his empty hands, dissatisfied as he called out to Yao Nian, "I was standing up for you! And you just leave me here?"
She opened the car door, cleared her throat, and deliberately changed her voice to say, "Zheyuan Ge, there's an old Chinese saying: 'Those who know when to yield are the true heroes.'"
Shen Du couldn't help but laugh, pressing the horn for Ji Zheyuan, who was still frozen in place.
"Damn it!" Ji Zheyuan adjusted his collar and got into the car. "I didn't expect you to be so good at playing both sides; it really hurts my brotherly heart."
Yao Nian leaned closer and whispered, "We're currently under someone else's roof; let's just endure it for now. We'll talk after we get down the mountain."
Shen Du adjusted the rearview mirror and calmly said, "I can hear you."
