The little girl stood at his door, carrying a large bag and several smaller ones. She wore a fluffy white coat and a fuzzy fisherman's hat, resembling a polar bear.
Shen Du opened his mouth slightly, his expression clearly one of surprise. "What are you doing here?"
His voice was noticeably hoarse, his lips pale, and beads of sweat formed on his forehead.
Yao Nian frowned at him. "Zhe Yuan said you have a fever."
"Come inside first; it's cold out here." Shen Du coughed into his fist and took the items from her hands, then retrieved a pair of slippers from the shoe cabinet and placed them on the floor.
Yao Nian slipped into the slippers, which were oversized for her small feet, making her walk awkwardly.
She glanced around; Shen Du's home was a spacious flat, clean and decorated in dark tones, similar to his office style.
He seemed to favor wooden furniture; the dining table and chairs, sideboard, and TV stand were all in wood tones, with a large brown carpet laid out in the middle of the living room.
As Shen Du went into the kitchen to get some water, Yao Nian quickly said, "You don't need to fuss over me; I just brought some things."
"What's the rush?" Shen Du picked up his phone to check. "Did you call me?"
"Yeah." Yao Nian felt an inexplicable tightness in her chest. Was it because she caught a chill during their camping trip?
Shen Du looked at her with a hint of amusement in his eyes. "So you're here to take care of Uncle?"
Yao Nian chose to ignore his question. "Have you eaten yet?"
"Not yet; I just woke up."
She opened the plastic bags she had placed on the table, first bringing out a bowl of plain congee, followed by a bowl of pumpkin porridge. When she set down a third bowl of black rice and red date porridge in front of him, Shen Du's brow twitched.
He suddenly recalled how he had made her drink congee for an entire week while she was hospitalized.
"Why does it feel like you're getting back at me?" he asked.
Yao Nian thought he didn't want to eat porridge and earnestly explained, "You need to eat light when you have a fever, and you have an injury on your arm that requires special care."
"Alright," Shen Du said as he opened the food container with a sigh. "If it's porridge bought by a little girl, I have to finish it."
She paused for a moment while rummaging through the bag for more items.
Shen Du took a spoonful of black rice porridge and asked, "Have you eaten?"
"Not yet," Yao Nian replied hurriedly. She had rushed out and bought a bunch of things without feeling hungry. "I'll eat later."
He pulled out a chair for her. "Then sit down and eat together."
Yao Nian silently looked at the remaining bowls of plain porridge and millet porridge on the table. After a long pause, she finally managed to say, "I don't want to drink porridge."
Shen Du curled his lips slightly and tapped a few times on his phone screen. Since he got home yesterday, he had only drunk water and hadn't eaten anything. Now, with a warm bowl of porridge in his stomach, he felt his entire belly warming up.
However, the feeling of soreness in his body didn't lessen. His throat felt as if it were stuffed with cotton, and Shen Du couldn't help but cough a couple of times.
The fluff from the girl's coat brushed against Shen Du's cheek, and the next moment, her cool hand rested on his forehead. Shen Du paused for a moment, feeling his breath become a bit heavier.
So hot, Yao Nian frowned. "Haven't you gotten your fever down yet?"
He picked up the ear thermometer to check his temperature, puzzled as to why it remained high despite having sweated so much.
Yao Nian murmured to herself before quickly saying, "Uncle Shen, you should go lie down in bed first."
"Don't be so anxious," Shen Du replied nonchalantly. "I'll be fine after taking some fever-reducing medicine."
Yao Nian insisted, "You just finished eating; you can't take medicine right away. Go lie down first; I'll bring the medicine to you later."
Seeing the serious expression on the young girl's face as she stared at him, Shen Du could only helplessly retreat into the bedroom. He slightly ajar the door and through the gap, he could just see her figure moving around in the kitchen.
