It seemed that the fever medicine was starting to take effect. Shen Du entered the bathroom, wiped his sweat with a towel, and changed into a set of pajamas. Instantly, he felt a bit more relaxed.
He walked out of the bedroom and saw Yao Nian standing in the kitchen, holding a bowl of soup, as if she had been frozen in place. The sound of bubbling water came from the stove, and steam rose from the pot in front of her, carrying a faintly sweet aroma of fruit.
"What are you cooking?" he asked.
Yao Nian jumped slightly at his voice, startled. "How did you come out?"
Shen Du leaned closer to take a look into the pot. "Pear?"
She nodded. "It's pear and orange soup. My mom said it helps with coughs."
Shen Du's gaze lingered for a moment. The young girl was only wearing a thin, fitted sweater, her long hair casually tucked behind her ears. Her figure was slender, with a delicate back and a gracefully elongated neck that led down to slightly prominent collarbones and rounded contours.
The steam grew thicker as the temperature rose, momentarily dazzling Shen Du. He shifted his gaze away and casually remarked, "Aren't you cold in that turtleneck?"
Yao Nian was focused on her phone, timing the soup's cooking time. She looked at him in confusion. "Not really. The heating is on quite well in here."
The timer on her phone vibrated; the fruity aroma wafting from the pot had become quite strong. Yao Nian rolled up her sleeves and reached to lift the pot lid just as Shen Du tried to stop her. A burst of scalding steam shot out.
"Ah!" Yao Nian exclaimed, immediately retracting her hand.
The lid clattered onto the countertop with a loud bang. Shen Du quickly turned off the heat. "Did you get burned?"
He turned on the faucet and took her hand, placing it under the cold water in the sink. The icy water washed over her reddened knuckles, but her wrist still felt hot to the touch, accompanied by Shen Du's faint scent of laundry detergent.
Only then did she notice that he had changed clothes. "Did you take a shower?" Yao Nian mumbled. "I thought you shouldn't bathe when you have a high fever."
"I didn't shower; I just wiped myself down," he replied.
Shen Du took the bowl of soup from her hands and grabbed a sky-blue ceramic bowl from under the cabinet, pouring the soup into it.
Although the little girl was not spoiled, it was clear that she had never done any hard work. Looking at the bowl filled with oddly shaped fruit pieces, he couldn't help but chuckle softly.
Yao Nian felt a bit embarrassed. "It might not look very appealing. Why don't you try a taste first? If it's really bad, just consider it medicine."
Shen Du lowered his gaze and took a sip of the soup with the fruit chunks.
"How is it?" She looked at him with hopeful eyes.
"It's very good." Shen Du lifted the bowl and drank the remaining soup in one go.
Yao Nian clearly didn't believe him; there was still half of it left in the pot. She reached for a spoon to taste it herself.
To her surprise, Shen Du quickly covered the pot with its lid. "Wasn't this made for me to drink?"
Yao Nian was incredulous. "Does that mean I can't have any?"
"You can't; you're not coughing."
Under Yao Nian's urging, Shen Du measured his temperature again. The fever had subsided for now, and his complexion looked much better than when she first arrived, though his voice still sounded hoarse.
Yao Nian glanced at her watch, thinking that Lin Mo and Fang Yiran should be arriving soon. She reached for her coat on the chair and called out to Shen Du, who was rinsing his mouth at the sink, "Uncle Shen, I'm leaving."
Shen Du quickly came out. "What time is it?"
"It's almost seven." Yao Nian thought for a moment and reminded him, "If the medicine wears off and your fever comes back, you still need to go to the hospital."
"Okay." He replied with a smile, curious to see what else the little girl might say.
She put on her coat and picked up the bag of leftover fried chicken. "You should rest early; I'm leaving now."
"Wait," Shen Du said as he grabbed the car keys from the entryway. "I'll drive you to school."
Yao Nian shook her head. "You just got better; don't tire yourself out. I can take a taxi."
After saying that, she put on her hat and transformed into a little polar bear.
