It was the peak season for returning home, and every train to Huaibei was sold out from afternoon until midnight. She zipped up her suitcase and murmured to herself while staring at her phone, "Forget it, I'll just call a ride back."
As Yao Nian pulled her suitcase out of the dormitory, she stumbled slightly on the steps at the entrance. Lin Mo, quick on her feet, grabbed her arm. "Hey, take it easy."
Yao Nian nodded absentmindedly. "I'll head out first."
Lin Mo looked at her with some concern. "Be careful on the way back. Don't rush too much."
Yao Dan hadn't gone into detail over the phone; she only mentioned something about illegal fundraising and urged Yao Nian to come back quickly.
By the time Yao Nian arrived in Huaibei, it was already dark, but the villa was brightly lit. The front door was wide open, and as soon as she stepped inside, the noise abruptly stopped.
There were many people in the living room; aside from her uncle, most were relatives from Yao Zhandong's side. Her uncle sat on the sofa with a frown, smoking a cigarette, while her aunt sighed repeatedly. Yao Dan was on a call and immediately put down her phone when she saw Yao Nian return.
"You're finally back!"
The anxious man was her uncle, Yao Dan's husband.
"Has your dad been in touch with you?"
Yao Nian's heart sank as she took a deep breath. "What’s going on?"
Yao Dan's face was stern as she explained, "Before the New Year, your dad had a real estate project that we invested in. He said the property would go on sale in the second half of the year, but it got delayed for months. Before we could even get the pre-sale permit, he ran into trouble."
"When did this happen?" Yao Nian's voice tightened.
Her uncle took a deep drag from his cigarette, his expression grave. "Today, as soon as he arrived in Huaibei, the police took him away. We only found out after asking around that the government never approved that piece of land!"
"Over a million!" Her aunt wiped away tears. "That was our retirement money; we invested because he’s family. Who knew he would put us in such a bind?"
"Enough," Yao Dan interrupted with a furrowed brow. "What good does it do to talk about this now?"
She looked at Yao Nian. "It’s not just our family; I heard from the police that your dad raised quite a bit of money for this project and has been reported by someone. We called you back to brainstorm ways to see if we can get him out."
Terms like opening sales and pre-sale permits were foreign to Yao Nian, but these relatives felt all too familiar.
Her uncle sighed deeply. "Why are you telling Xiao Nian all this? She's just a child; what does she understand?"
"What else can we do?" Her uncle snapped back urgently. "Second Brother is getting divorced and might face jail time! Our family invested at least two hundred thousand! Even if I threw that money into water, I should at least hear a splash; I can't just let it go without a fight!"
Auntie immediately chimed in, "Xiao Nian, let's not talk about other people's money for now; we can't just let our own family's money disappear like this."
Yao Nian threw down her bag and spoke coldly, "My dad hasn't been convicted yet, and you don't know the specifics. How can you assume he will go to jail?"
She shot a glance at her aunt. "Over the past few years, my dad has helped your family make quite a bit of money, hasn't he? He even provided a wedding house for my cousin when he got married. Now that something has happened, isn't it a bit too eager for you to come asking for money?"
"How can you speak like that?" Uncle slammed his hand on the table. "This is a matter of principle. We invested real money based on your father's words. Now that the project is gone and he’s in trouble, why shouldn't we ask what’s going on?"
"Now you see me as just a child?"
Yao Nian felt a chill in her heart. In the past, these people had rushed to seek out Yao Zhandong to help them make money, relying on him to back them up. Now that trouble had struck, they had completely changed their faces. What kind of greedy wolves had he raised?
