He turned on the kitchen light, and the entire villa instantly brightened. He removed the lid of the thermal container, revealing a layer of golden, crispy pastries and a second layer filled with dumplings.
"These were made by my grandmother. She’s quite skilled in the kitchen. Want to try?"
Yao Nian was just about to reach out for them when she noticed they seemed a bit cold. Shen Du walked toward the kitchen. "I'll heat them up."
After warming them, the pastries emitted waves of steam. Yao Nian took a bite, and tears welled up in her eyes, threatening to spill over.
"Hey," Shen Du bent down, gently wiping away her trembling tears with his fingertip. "Can you finish your meal first?"
His voice remained as gentle as ever, even carrying a hint of coaxing.
Yao Nian bit her lip and asked, "Do you know everything?"
It was hard to explain why he had suddenly appeared at her doorstep on New Year's Eve if he didn’t. "Why won’t you tell me?"
Shen Du half-squatted beside her, resting his hand on the back of her chair, his hair still damp from the melting snow.
Yao Nian remained silent, her head lowered. Her nose was still red, and traces of tears lingered on her face.
"Let’s eat the dumplings first," Shen Du said, stroking her head. "Then you can tell me all about the case."
Yao Nian was confused. Today was New Year's Eve; did he come all this way just for her father’s situation?
"Not entirely." Shen Du brought out the dumplings from the microwave and placed a pair of chopsticks in front of her.
Just as Yao Nian picked up a dumpling, he continued, "I came to keep this young lady company for the New Year."
After learning about Yao Zhandong's situation, Shen Du immediately contacted Ou Yi'an to understand the general circumstances over the phone. Without hesitation, he put on his coat and grabbed his car keys to head out.
Shen Du found it hard to imagine how Yao Nian had endured during this time. Such a significant event had occurred, yet she hadn’t mentioned a word to him.
Her family didn’t understand why he had to rush out on New Year’s Eve; only the elderly lady hadn’t stopped him. She even packed him some pastries and boiled a pot of dumplings before cheerfully urging him to go without worry.
The elderly lady seemed fully aware of everything. Shen Du didn’t have time to ponder further; he grabbed his things and left.
He glanced at the scattered papers on the table: one was a detention notice, and another was a court seizure order.
He picked them up for a closer look. All properties under Yao Zhandong's name had been frozen, including the villa where she currently lived.
Since it had reached the seizure stage, it indicated that this storm had been brewing for some time; he must have been sued long before now.
Seeing his serious expression, Yao Nian felt a bit guilty as she spoke up, "Uncle Shen, actually I have already entrusted Lawyer Ou..."
Shen Du turned his head, quietly staring into her eyes, and said lightly, "Oh, I intercepted it."
Yao Nian looked confused. What did that mean? After thinking it over carefully, her eyes widened in disbelief. "You mean, you're going to represent my dad's case?"
Shen Du raised an eyebrow slightly, "From your tone, it sounds like you're not very willing?"
"No, no!" She immediately panicked and shook her hands. "I absolutely don't doubt your professional abilities. It's just that I've already made arrangements with Lawyer Ou, and switching at the last minute—doesn't that count as a breach of contract?"
Shen Du glanced at her. "You still contacted him?"
This question left Yao Nian silent.
"Don't worry," he said gently. "I've communicated with him; he has no objections."
"You know each other?"
"Otherwise, how do you think I found out?"
They exchanged glances, his eyes particularly bright under the light, and the gentle smile at the corner of his mouth was incredibly warm.
