Until she felt the person in her arms shivering from the cold, Shen Du reluctantly let her go.
"Shall we go inside?"
Yao Nian picked up the coat that had fallen on the floor and rubbed her nose. "I already told you to come in."
Once they entered the house, Shen Du felt his stiff body gradually warming up. Yao Nian came out of the kitchen with a cup of milk and handed it to him, awkwardly speaking as if she hadn’t yet adjusted to her new identity. "Uncle Shen, you should go upstairs and take a nap later. I'll make the bed."
He took the milk and, taking advantage of the moment, grasped her wrist, smiling broadly, looking extremely pleased.
The next second, Yao Nian heard him ask, "Still calling me Uncle?"
She hesitantly looked up, just catching his slightly raised eyebrows.
Yao Nian mumbled, "I’m used to it."
"That habit needs to change," Shen Du paused for a moment, feeling a twinge of guilt.
After a brief silence, she softly asked, "Do you think I’m too young?"
Shen Du set down the cup and sighed dramatically. "Yes, that's why I’m worried about you. A young girl in her first relationship ends up with a boyfriend this much older."
Hearing the words "boyfriend," Yao Nian quickly lifted the corners of her lips and then seriously reassured him, "You mustn't think like that; I really don’t think you’re old at all."
Shen Du took a sip of milk and said with a hint of melancholy, "Who was it that kept attacking my age? Saying something about how if this were ancient times..."
Feeling embarrassed, Yao Nian lunged forward to cover his mouth but moved too quickly, stepping on Shen Du's toes and losing her balance. She fell backward suddenly.
Shen Du hadn’t put down the cup yet and was afraid she would fall, so he quickly caught her waist with one hand. A few drops of liquid inevitably splashed out of the cup, bringing their faces close together.
So close that he could see the fine hairs on her skin and the blush rising on her cheeks.
Noticing that the girl seemed a bit nervous at such close proximity, Shen Du realized he couldn’t even sense her breathing.
After a brief silence, he steadied her with his hand and straightened up again, looking at her with gentle yet intense eyes.
He leaned closer to her ear and lowered his voice, his words carrying a light breath: "You have no idea how happy I am."
Outside the window, the ice and snow gradually melted under the warm sun; ice crystals began to loosen and dissolve, dripping from eaves and branches into clear puddles below.
Yao Nian stood at the kitchen door, repeatedly confirming with him: "Are you sure you don’t need to rest for a bit?"
Shen Du took two eggs out of the refrigerator and smiled as he replied, "Do you think I can sleep now?"
Yao Nian pouted, watching him crack the eggs and pour them into a bowl, stirring them for a moment. Compared to her disastrous attempt at making pear and orange soup, his movements were fluid and effortless. He heated the oil in the pan, and the egg mixture immediately puffed up, sizzling and crackling, quickly turning golden and fluffy.
It was just before the New Year, and with no leftovers at Yao Nian's home, Shen Du had to simplify things. He decided to cook a bowl of noodles with the few ingredients left in the fridge to fill his girlfriend's stomach.
"Oh right," Shen Du said as he poured water into the pot, glancing over at her. "After we finish eating, let's clean up."
Yao Nian took out two bowls from the cupboard and placed them on the counter, pausing for a moment. "Why do we need to clean up?"
He covered the pot with a lid. "I'm going back to Shanghai with you. This morning, I saw a few people loitering around your front door. They didn't look friendly."
The excitement she had felt earlier faded significantly at his words. "They've come again?"
Hearing the word "again," Shen Du frowned. "They've been here before? Who are they?"
"Probably my dad's creditors," Yao Nian said quietly. "After he went in, these people came one after another looking for me. I've almost gotten used to it."
Shen Du's brow furrowed even more as he scrutinized her from head to toe. "Did they do anything to you?"
"No, no," Yao Nian hurriedly replied. "I didn't even open the door."
The water in the pot began to boil, and Shen Du turned off the heat.
