A fine mist of medicine sprayed out as Shen Du gently rubbed the bruised area with his palm.
Beside him, Ji Zheyuan felt extremely out of place, as if he had walked into the wrong scene.
"Are we having lunch together?" Shen Du tilted his head to look at him.
"No, I'm leaving," he silently stood up. "I really don't understand why I came here to seek out misery during the New Year."
Shen Du laughed, "So why did you come?"
"To bring you something," Ji Zheyuan sighed, handing over a package he had placed by the entrance. "Cordyceps and Dendrobium that Yun Cheng brought back, for your parents."
Shen Du smiled as he accepted the gift box. "Thanks, brother."
Ji Zheyuan waved his hand dismissively and glanced at Yao Nian, who was focused on eating her sandwich. He frowned and asked quietly, "Are you serious?"
Shen Du put away his smile. "You know me; I never joke about feelings."
Ji Zheyuan looked at him, hesitated for a moment, then shook his head. "Right."
After finishing breakfast, Yao Nian picked up her plate and glass to put them in the sink.
Just as she rolled up her sleeves to wash the dishes, Shen Du came in and took the dishcloth from her hands. "I'll do it."
She turned to look back at him. "Is Zheyuan gone?"
"Yeah," Shen Du turned on the faucet and inexplicably chuckled. "He probably can't wait to tell Xiao Lin about us."
But Yao Nian couldn't find anything funny about it.
She wrapped her arms gently around his waist from behind and nuzzled her head against his back.
For a moment, the man’s back stiffened.
Then he heard Yao Nian's somewhat frustrated voice: "I wish I could grow up a little faster."
Shen Du placed the dishes in the drying rack and turned around to embrace her. "Did you hear that?"
The young girl buried her face in his chest and nodded, her voice filled with grievance: "He said you're a beast."
Shen Du paused for a moment, then a smile crept onto his lips. "He was joking."
Seeing that she remained silent, Shen Du spoke softly: "Don't blame Zheyuan; honestly, when I realized I liked you, I thought I was being a beast myself."
Yao Nian lifted her head and glared at him in discontent.
Shen Du continued, "So far, every major decision in my life has been made after careful consideration. But to be honest with you, this is the only thing I feel is wrong, yet I still chose to abandon reason and go for it."
"Will you regret it?" she asked.
Shen Du shook his head with a smile, instinctively pulling her closer. "I've already gained an unexpected result, so I won't care about others' opinions."
Yao Nian fought back the urge to cry, tilting her chin up to bring her face closer to his. "Kiss me."
Shen Du brushed aside the loose strands of hair on her cheek and leaned down to kiss her.
This time, Yao Nian secretly opened her eyes. The slight tremor of his eyelashes was so close that she tightened her arms around his waist, intentionally deepening the kiss. What began as a gentle peck gradually transformed into a lingering entanglement of lips and tongues, moist and prolonged.
When Shen Du finished washing his hands and came out of the kitchen, Yao Nian was sitting cross-legged on the sofa, scrolling through Weibo.
He sat down beside her. "What do you want to do this afternoon? Should we go out for a bit?"
Yao Nian turned off her phone screen and thought for a moment. "Let's go watch a movie. Several new films are being released during the New Year."
Shen Du was pleased that she could temporarily set aside thoughts of Yao Zhandong and was willing to suggest going out for some fun. "After the movie, shall we go have hot pot?"
Yao Nian was checking the showtimes when she glanced at him. "Never mind; hot pot without spicy food lacks soul."
Shen Du sighed in exasperation. "I swear, when have I ever stopped you from eating spicy food? I just want you to eat a little less."
Yao Nian slumped back against the sofa, mimicking his tone as she sighed. "Better than nothing."
Seeing her expression, Shen Du couldn't help but pinch her cheek playfully. "If you want to eat it, then go ahead. Just don't crush the Omeprazole and dip it in."
Yao Nian laughed heartily. "I always thought you were a person of principles. Are you really compromising this easily?"
"Well," he replied with a hint of reluctance, "I just didn't want you to find me annoying for always controlling you."
"No," Yao Nian said as she wrapped her arms around his neck and blinked playfully. "I like it when you take care of me."
