She paused for a moment, temporarily settling in Shanghai. The three of them exchanged knowing glances at the same time, turning their attention to Shen Du.
Her mother winked at him, saying, "Since that's the case, remember to let Shen Du help you with the location selection. He has a wide network in Shanghai and can lend a hand."
Shen Du maintained a neutral expression as he scanned the living room. "Where's Grandma?"
"She went back to her room to take her medicine," his mother replied. "The old lady has osteoporosis; if she stands for too long, her bones start to ache."
Since entering the house, they hadn't engaged in direct conversation, but Shen Du could sense Ren Ran's gaze lingering on him, both intentionally and unintentionally. So he excused himself to check on the old lady.
Grandma was squinting at the small print on a medicine bottle through her reading glasses. When she saw him, her eyes brightened with warmth. "Little Du is here."
Shen Du picked up the pile of bottles and jars on the low table and organized them according to the instructions, labeling each with dosage and frequency. "I've put labels on for you; next time you won't have to search through each bottle."
"You've come here to hide from me, haven't you?" Grandma asked with a smile.
Shen Du sighed, "Can you not expose me?"
"Your mother is probably meddling again, but don’t blame her; she’s just worried."
"I know." He affixed the note he had written onto the bottle.
"If there's someone, bring them back early so we can meet them. It saves your parents from worrying every day."
Shen Du was momentarily taken aback and asked with a laugh, "How do you know everything like some kind of fortune teller?"
Grandma raised an eyebrow, "I calculated it."
He couldn't help but admire her keen insight; he had only slipped up once, and she had already caught on.
As dinner time approached, everyone began preparing to head to the hotel. Ren Ran picked up her bag from the coffee table and stood up. "Uncle and Auntie, I won't disturb you any longer."
Shen's mother immediately said, "Better early than late! If you’re free tonight, Xiao Ran, why don’t you join us for dinner?"
Ren Ran hesitated. "Would that be appropriate?"
Shen Du felt a flicker of displeasure but remained silent as his mother had already put it out there in front of everyone. He merely furrowed his brow slightly.
"It's just a regular family gathering," his mother insisted warmly. "You're practically family; you've met most of us already."
Ren Ran smiled and nodded. "Then I’ll gladly accept."
Yao Nian never expected that in the middle of winter, she would find herself rowing a boat in the cold wind alongside Qiao Shuzhen. Standing at the bow, one hand paddling while the other held up her phone to record, she couldn't help but sigh repeatedly.
"Mom," Yao Nian said, her scarf wrapped tightly around her face, leaving only her eyes visible, looking utterly disenchanted. Didn't she feel cold?
Qiao Shuzhen laughed; everything was new and exciting for her on her first trip to China. After dinner, Yao Nian felt a bit drained but insisted on buying gifts to take back to England. So, she accompanied them to a nearby mall.
Qiao Shuzhen picked out several outfits for her and urged her to try them on.
"I have enough clothes already, and spring is almost here; I won't be able to wear them for long."
"There's still some time before the late spring chill arrives. Besides, when was the last time your mom bought you new clothes? Be a good girl and try them on."
Just then, a message from Shen Du came through, asking what she was doing. With her arms full of clothes, Yao Nian couldn't type back, so she sent him a voice message: "Just finished dinner, now I'm shopping with my mom."
Not two minutes after sending the message, she received a notification from Alipay.
Note: "Buying pretty clothes for the young lady."
