The family gathering was held at a hotel that Xu Zhengnan had booked in advance. They didn't arrive too early, and by the time they entered the private room, most of the others were already there.
Shen Du and Ren Ran had been dating for a while, and they were now at the stage of discussing marriage. As a result, all the relatives present had met her before, so they were quite surprised to see her.
As the eldest member of the family, the old lady naturally took the seat of honor. Just as Shen Du sat down, his mother immediately invited Ren Ran to sit beside him.
Shen Du knew exactly what his mother was trying to do, and he thought it would be necessary to explain things clearly to her after dinner.
Ren Ran turned to him and whispered in a voice only they could hear, "Why do you seem like you’re not very welcoming?"
Shen Du paused for a few seconds before replying, "Why did you suddenly come here?"
"I thought I explained it before," Ren Ran said with a smile. "I just stopped by to visit Grandma; she used to treat me quite well."
Shen Du simply responded with an "mm" and fell silent.
She carefully studied the side profile of the man next to her. He looked much the same as he did two years ago, but there was an unfamiliar coldness in his brow that made Ren Ran feel uneasy.
She picked up a glass of water from the table and took a sip, trying to find a topic to discuss. "I’ve chosen a few places in Shanghai; if you have time, could you help me figure out which one would be more suitable for setting up a clothing customization studio?"
"Zhe Yuan has more experience with site selection; you can consult him," Shen Du replied.
"Have you forgotten?" Ren Ran said, lightly tapping her pink almond-shaped nails on the table. "You were the one who gave me advice when I first opened my studio. Now you won’t even help with this little thing?"
Shen Du's tone remained flat. "The law firm is busy with cases piling up; I really don’t have much time."
Seemingly caught off guard by his blunt refusal, Ren Ran hesitated for a moment and tried to steady her nerves.
"Ah Du, actually I came here this time—"
Just then, Shen Du's phone vibrated on the table, lighting up the screen.
Ren Ran's gaze fell on it instinctively, but her words got stuck in her throat when she noticed that the phone's wallpaper was a picture of a girl.
Shen Du unlocked his phone, and as he read the message, his lips gradually curved into a smile, his eyes sparkling with joy.
Ren Ran observed this scene closely.
"You all continue eating," Shen Du suddenly stood up and said. "I’ll step outside to take a call."
"Xiao Ran," Shen Du's mother called out to her. "You haven’t touched your food much; are you not used to it?"
Ren Ran came back to her senses and absentmindedly smiled in response. "How could that be?"
She frequently glanced toward the door, waiting for a long time without seeing Shen Du arrive. Finally, she made an excuse to go to the restroom and, almost unconsciously, followed him outside.
When Shen Du finished his phone call and came out after washing his hands, he found the woman standing at the corridor entrance, seemingly waiting for him.
He paused for a moment, then pulled out a paper towel to dry his hands. "What's wrong?"
Now it was just the two of them. Ren Ran stepped forward directly and asked, "Whose name is on your phone screen?"
Shen Du glanced at his phone and suddenly smiled. "My girlfriend."
"How is that possible?" Her pupils trembled slightly. "Auntie clearly said you haven't been in a relationship for two years."
Shen Du casually replied, "I just haven't had the chance to tell her."
Ren Ran bit her lip tightly. "If I said I decided to go abroad because of you, would you believe me?"
