"You don't have to be so sentimental," Yao Nian said softly.
She took a card from her bag. "I've left you some money. Keep it safe. No matter what happens with your dad, your mom doesn't want you to neglect yourself."
Yao Nian watched as her eyes began to redden, her voice catching in her throat. "Will you come back?"
"Of course."
Qiao Shuzhen gazed at her for a long time. The girl in her arms had already grown into a graceful young woman, and for a fleeting moment, she saw a reflection of her younger self in her.
As a mother, she couldn't help but offer the usual advice at their parting: "Shen Du is a good guy; you can tell he cares about you. But remember, you need to choose someone who is inherently good, not just someone who treats you well."
Yao Nian understood what she meant; time would reveal everything.
"You're so confident?"
"I trust my judgment."
After checking in, the airport announcements began urging passengers to board. In the end, Yao Nian still hugged Qiao Shuzhen tightly.
A brief chill brushed against her neck, and in an instant, Qiao Shuzhen lifted her head and took a deep breath. "Well then, Mom is leaving."
Until her figure disappeared at the security checkpoint, Yao Nian slowly swallowed the lump in her throat and turned to leave.
Once outside the airport, she noticed that the ride-sharing app had scheduled a pickup for ten minutes later. She exited the interface and was about to wave down a taxi when she spotted a man in a black coat leaning against a car in the drop-off area, wearing the scarf she had bought for him, his eyes smiling as he looked at her.
Yao Nian's eyes lit up, and she immediately dashed over and threw herself into his arms.
Shen Du wrapped his arms around the young girl tightly.
She looked up at him with surprise. "How did you get here?"
"I came to see if my girl had been crying." Shen Du lowered his gaze to examine her; indeed, her eyes were red.
Yao Nian rubbed her eyes and unconsciously lowered her voice. "I realized I'm more reluctant to leave than I thought."
Shen Du held her hand. "And she loves you more than you realize."
"Shall we go for hot pot?"
"I want to go to that place from last time."
"Okay."
In the familiar courtyard of blue bricks and mud tiles, wisps of smoke rose gently. Shen Du scooped a spoonful of beef and placed it into her bowl.
Yao Nian gasped as the spiciness hit her, fanning herself with her hand, and curiously asked, "Why aren’t you stopping me today?"
Shen Du opened a bottle of soy milk and handed it to her. "I thought you might find me too controlling."
Yao Nian gulped down a large sip, finally alleviating some of the heat in her mouth. Shen Du couldn't help but recall the last time they were here, when the young girl had been heartbroken and despondent.
Just as Yao Nian set the soy milk bottle down, she noticed Shen Du gazing at her thoughtfully.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
The corners of his eyes lifted slightly, as if he was about to bring up an old grievance.
She paused for a moment.
"I remember you said you really liked a boy before?"
Mentioning this made Yao Nian feel guilty quickly; she picked up the soup spoon and began to stir aimlessly in the pot, pretending she hadn’t heard.
Shen Du clearly wasn’t going to let her brush it off so easily. "Like the moon?"
Yao Nian cleared her throat and mumbled, "I didn’t understand back then."
"And what about now?" Shen Du crossed his arms, his thumb resting on his chin as he looked at her intently.
Suddenly realizing he was feeling jealous, Yao Nian's eyes curved into a smile. "Now I only like you."
In truth, whether in the past or present, she had always liked only him.
