Before they knew it, the entire month of February had passed, and as spring arrived in March, the temperature in Shanghai gradually warmed up.
Yao Nian found herself overwhelmed with coursework this semester, alongside her driving practice. Shen Du had taken a trip to Huaibei, and by now, it had been nearly half a month since they last saw each other.
Ji Zheyuan had taken two weeks off to prepare for his wedding. In the midst of his busy schedule, he managed to send Shen Du an invitation, specifically reminding him to bring his family along.
Shen Du timed his call to Yao Nian just as her class was ending. "The eighth? I just happen to have my Subject Four exam that day. Is it okay if I'm a bit late?"
"I'll pick you up after your exam," he replied.
"No need! Aren't you the best man? You should get there early to help out. I can just take a cab over after I'm done."
With Lin Mo Tian participating in a group activity, only Fang Yi and Yao Nian remained in their dormitory. Seeing Yao Nian changing clothes, Fang Yi, holding her Bonnie Bunny, tilted her head and asked, "Are you going out?"
"Yeah," Yao Nian said as she slipped on her jacket and tied her hair into a bun. "I want to pick out a wedding gift."
"Then I'll go with you," Fang Yi said. "Lin Mo will definitely be having dinner with the group tonight; I'll be so bored alone in the dorm."
"Sure," Yao Nian replied with some suspicion. "But it's Friday; aren't you going out with Cheng Xu?"
Ever since Fang Yi started dating Cheng Xu, they had been inseparable every weekend without fail.
Fang Yi sighed, "Well, he contacted an internship place and took a few days off to go to Binhai."
Once they were both dressed, they set off. Although Shen Du had said it was fine for her to come empty-handed, Yao Nian still felt it wouldn't be appropriate to attend a wedding without a gift.
They browsed several gift shops in the mall before Yao Nian finally settled on a set of champagne glasses from a collaboration line. Even if they didn't drink alcohol, they would look nice as decor at home.
After dinner, with plenty of time before curfew, they found a dessert shop on the second floor of the mall and sat down for a while.
"Hey, do you want to try this strawberry soufflé?" Yao Nian asked as she looked over the dessert menu.
Fang Yi was staring down at her phone.
"Yi?" Yao Nian called out again.
"Huh?" Fang Yi lifted her head in confusion. "Sure, just order whatever you like."
She seemed noticeably distracted, and Yao Nian ordered one soufflé along with two cups of the forest berry yogurt that the staff highly recommended.
Sipping on her straw, Fang Yi frowned and said, "Yao Nian, I feel like something's off with Cheng Xu."
"What's wrong?" Yao Nian handed her the fork.
"I've been messaging him these past few days, but he hasn't replied much, or when he does, it's just a half-hearted response."
"Weren't you saying he was in an interview? Maybe he just didn't see your messages."
Fang Yi shook her head. "His interview ended in the morning. I just video-called him a moment ago, and it was barely eight o'clock. He told me he was too tired and was getting ready to sleep."
Fang Yi had been with Cheng Xu for almost half a year now. Yao Nian had met him a few times; he didn't say much and seemed like a pretty honest guy.
"Don't overthink it," Yao Nian comforted her. "It could be that the interview didn't go well. The pressure is high in senior year. When he gets back, you should ask him about it."
Fang Yi nodded thoughtfully.
As they were preparing to head back to school, Yao Nian received a call from Shen Du. Knowing she was at the mall with her roommate, he said he would come to pick them up.
After not seeing each other for half a month, Shen Du arrived wearing a black leather jacket with a white shirt underneath. He rarely dressed so casually, and it gave him an air of carefree wildness.
He got out of the car and took the large gift box from Yao Nian's arms. "What did you buy?"
"It's a wedding gift for Zhe Yuan Ge and Xiao Lin Jie."
"They said you could have just come over." Shen Du placed the items in the trunk and greeted Fang Yi, who was standing nearby.
The moment Yao Nian saw him, she felt an impulse to hug him. However, since Fang Yi was there, she restrained herself and held back her feelings for the time being.
When they arrived at Hua University, Fang Yi thanked Shen Du and got out of the car first. Yao Nian also pretended to get out, but then her wrist was gently caught by him.
