The woman in front of her wore a beige dress, her face adorned with light makeup. Her black hair was elegantly tucked behind her ears, where she wore white pearl earrings that accentuated her grace with every movement. However, the way she scrutinized Yao Nian left her feeling somewhat perplexed.
"Hello." Yao Nian smiled and nodded.
Shen Du served her a bowl of shark fin soup. "You must be hungry. Have something to eat first."
Yao Nian didn’t recognize anyone else present, and she couldn’t join in on their conversations, so she quietly sat beside Shen Du, letting him feed her.
She wasn’t a dull person; she could clearly sense that after greeting Ren Ran, the atmosphere at the dining table had turned somewhat strange.
As the lights in the banquet hall dimmed, music began to play.
With the sound of music, the doors opened, and Song Xiaolin appeared in a vintage white lace wedding dress, slowly stepping onto a stage adorned with gardenias and butterfly orchids.
Yao Nian rested her chin on Shen Du's shoulder, watching the ceremony on stage with him. During the speeches from both families, her gaze unconsciously drifted to the man beside her. He was dressed particularly formally today in a black suit and white shirt, with the floral tie she had gifted him neatly knotted at his collar. Though he wore an outfit that exuded elegance, it somehow made him appear incredibly restrained—yet there was an inexplicable allure about him.
Noticing her small movements, Shen Du took hold of her fingers as she fiddled with his tie and kissed them lightly by his lips.
Yao Nian felt her ears flush. "What are you doing? There are so many people here."
She turned to take a sip of juice, only to find Ren Ran watching her.
Their eyes met, but the woman showed no sign of embarrassment as she calmly shifted her gaze away.
Such an unabashed scrutiny made Yao Nian feel uncomfortable.
Ren Ran observed their intimate gestures with a pang of pain in her heart, especially the way Shen Du looked at Yao Nian—with utmost affection and tenderness. She realized that even during their time together, she had never seen Shen Du express such warmth in his eyes.
After the ceremony concluded, she excused herself to the restroom. When she finished washing her hands and stepped out, she happened to run into Song Xiaolin, who had just changed into her reception dress.
"Sister Xiaolin!" Yao Nian greeted her with a bright smile and a wave.
"Yao Nian?" Song Xiaolin lifted her skirt as she approached, surprised. "I was just asking Zhe Yuan where you were; I hadn’t seen you."
"I got held up for a bit on the way here, but thankfully I didn’t miss the ceremony," Yao Nian said as she looked Song Xiaolin up and down. "You look beautiful today; congratulations on your marriage!"
Song Xiaolin smiled shyly. "I received your gift; thank you! I really liked it."
She suddenly said apologetically, "I'm really sorry about today. I only found out that Ren Ran was coming because Zhe Yuan mentioned it. The seats were all arranged in advance, and there really aren't any extra spots. Please don't take it personally."
Yao Nian was taken aback. What?
Outside, a bridesmaid called out, "Xiao Lin, are you ready? It's time to toast!"
"Coming!" Song Xiao Lin replied, then turned to Yao Nian and said, "Shen Lu and she broke up a long time ago. Don't overthink it, okay? Sister Shi will treat you to dinner as an apology."
With that, she hurried out, leaving Yao Nian in a daze.
It took her five minutes to process what Song Xiao Lin had just said. The woman named Ren Ran outside was Shen Du's ex-girlfriend?
Memories flooded back. On the day they got together, Shen Du had mentioned that he had been in a relationship before; he must have been referring to Ren Ran.
In fact, when she first learned about it, she wasn't surprised or bothered. The man was twelve years older than her; it would be unrealistic to think he had never dated anyone before.
The awkward atmosphere at the dining table and the way everyone looked at her made sense now.
So, everyone knew about this except for her.
