It wasn't until Shen Du called to ask why she hadn't returned yet that Yao Nian slowly made her way back. The ceremony had ended, and the newlyweds had exited. By the time she returned, Shen Du was no longer at his spot.
Zhong Tianhao noticed Yao Nian's unusual expression and thought she was feeling out of place. He greeted her, "Yao Nian, Shen Du went with A Yuan to toast. We're all friends at this table, so you don't need to be too reserved. Please eat more."
Yao Nian smiled slightly and thanked him.
A few people at the table were chatting, catching up after a long time apart. Some had even come back from out of town, so their conversation inevitably turned to their respective jobs.
"By the way, Xiao Ran," Liu Jingjing asked, "how long are you planning to stay this time?"
Ren Ran smiled and said, "I'm not leaving. I'm currently preparing to open my own studio, and I hope everyone will come to support me when it opens."
"What location?" a woman sitting opposite her chimed in. "When you open, I'll bring you a few gifts."
"Near the trade center," Ren Ran replied. "It's still under renovation, but once it's open, I'll treat everyone to a meal."
"The trade center?" Liu Jingjing exclaimed. "Isn't the rent there quite expensive? You're just back in the country and already making such a big investment?"
Ren Ran took a sip from her wine glass and said, "It's not worth renting; I bought it."
"My goodness," Liu Jingjing gasped. "If you have that kind of capability, why bother with a studio? You could just sit back and collect rent!"
"It's surprising," Yang Kaiyuan remarked with a sigh. "You came back and became your own boss right away. Unlike us, who are still struggling working for others—what a tough life."
"We all earn our living ourselves," Ren Ran said, glancing at Yao Nian with a smile. "A woman can only have confidence if she doesn't rely on others."
Her words were too pointed to ignore. Everyone could see how striking Yao Nian was, and Shen Du's achievements in the industry were well-known. Given their age difference, her words quickly sparked speculation about their relationship.
"Indeed," someone chimed in. "I'm not saying anything bad, but the atmosphere in universities these days is getting worse—especially among certain..."
She deliberately emphasized the phrase "female college students," suggesting that some young women relied on their looks and avoided hard work while seeking shortcuts.
As soon as she spoke, the atmosphere at the table froze for a few seconds.
Yao Nian squinted in the direction of the voice; it belonged to the woman who had earlier mentioned bringing gifts for Ren Ran.
If Ren Ran's previous comment had been veiled criticism, this woman was being outright blunt.
Zhong Tianhao frowned and couldn't help but say, "Xiao Wen, what are you talking about?"
Wang Xiaowen feigned innocence. "I didn't say anything; I was just reflecting on the current university culture."
Yao Nian pursed her lips and replied, "If there are shortcuts available, why shouldn't one take them? All roads lead to Rome."
Wang Xiaowen deliberately put on a surprised expression. "So, are you with Shen Lu just to take shortcuts?"
"Exactly," she replied, her eyes narrowing into a smile. "Isn't the purpose of reform and opening up to strengthen the country and prevent the people from suffering? If someone wants to suffer, let them. As for me, my life is precious; I can't endure hardship."
Her words left everyone present momentarily stunned.
Yang Kaiyuan leaned closer to Zhong Tianhao and whispered, "Wow, she's tough. I like this personality."
Zhong Tianhao was speechless. "What does it have to do with you?"
A light laugh suddenly came from behind them.
Yao Nian turned around in confusion, realizing that Shen Du had returned at some point, looking at her with a doting expression.
Wang Xiaowen's facade crumbled immediately as she began to complain, "Shen Lu, you heard that, right?"
Shen Du gave her a faint glance before sitting down next to Yao Nian. "My girl really can't handle hardship; she needs to be taken care of. Besides, I wouldn't want her to suffer."
Seeing the man's darkening expression, Wang Xiaowen's face turned pale, and she swallowed back the words she had intended to say.
