The crowd began to stir with excitement.
"Oh my God, when did our school get such a handsome guy?"
"Wait, I’ve seen him before. Isn’t he the boss of Zhuo Ye?"
"Ahhh, can you go up and get me his contact information?"
"Please, can’t you see he’s holding flowers? He’s obviously waiting for someone. Just give it up."
Yao Nian felt a wave of anxiety wash over her as she pretended not to recognize him and quickly walked down the steps.
Xiao Chi stepped in front of her with a long stride, his peach blossom eyes slightly raised. "Where are you running off to?"
Yao Nian shot him a glare and tried to sidestep to the left, but he mirrored her movement. She tried again to the right, and he followed suit once more.
Frustrated beyond measure, she raised her voice, "What do you want?!"
"To chase you," Xiao Chi said nonchalantly as he shoved the flowers into her arms, a smirk playing on his lips. "Do you have time? How about we grab a meal together?"
At this, the crowd erupted with even more enthusiasm, some onlookers whistling in delight at the spectacle.
Shen Du couldn’t reach Yao Nian by phone, so he decided to head to the school to find her. He knew her class schedule and had planned to arrive right after finishing up at the law firm. However, traffic had delayed him by over ten minutes.
After parking his car, he walked towards the teaching building and noticed a large crowd gathered at the entrance steps.
Shen Du scanned the crowd for her figure, his expression stiffening as his feet felt glued to the ground.
In plain sight, the man showed no fear of being watched by everyone around him, holding a striking bouquet of red roses that was both passionate and ostentatious.
His gaze seemed to be pricked by something sharp, gradually darkening with unease.
He recognized this man.
Shen Du hesitated, fighting against the urge to step forward as his fingers curled into a tight fist.
Sometimes he despised his own rationality; he wanted nothing more than to rush over and pull her away, to declare to everyone that she was his girl. Yet he also didn’t want to embarrass her in front of so many people. He had promised her mother that he would give her enough space and the right to choose for herself.
And he had kept that promise.
As he turned to leave, Shen Du felt an overwhelming sense of frustration and suffocation in his chest, almost as if he couldn’t catch his breath.
Yao Nian sighed helplessly as she looked at Xiao Chi. "Did I not make myself clear yesterday? Let me say it again: I have a boyfriend, and we are not breaking up."
Xiao Chi paid no mind to her words; he leaned in slightly closer and whispered, "Look, I'm already here, and with so many people watching, at least give me some face and take the flowers."
It felt inappropriate. Yao Nian instinctively looked up, and her peripheral vision caught sight of a figure in front of the long bench by the teaching building.
Though it was just a silhouette, that tall frame allowed her to recognize Shen Du at a glance.
In a hurry, Yao Nian placed the flowers into Xiao Chi's hands without thinking much and pushed through the crowd as she rushed down the steps.
It was Friday, and a large number of students were streaming toward the school gate, making it difficult for her to spot the man’s figure as it quickly got lost in the throng.
By the time she reached the school gate, there was no sign of him anywhere.
Xiao Chi followed closely behind her. "Why are you running so fast? What happened?"
Yao Nian was out of breath, her face anxious as she waved frantically in the direction of an approaching taxi.
After what felt like an eternity, she finally managed to hail an empty cab. Just as she opened the door, she paused, gripping it tightly as she turned to look back at the man, seemingly struggling to find the right words.
"Can you lend me another hundred yuan?"
Xiao Chi raised an eyebrow in surprise.
He hadn’t brought any cash with him, but after Yao Nian gave the driver their destination, he scanned his card again for another hundred yuan.
"Thank you," Yao Nian said sincerely this time. "I promise I’ll pay you back!"
The man watched as the taxi drove away, a strange smile appearing on his face. He then pulled out a cigarette from his pocket, lit it, and leisurely exhaled a puff of smoke, his figure becoming somewhat distorted in the hazy mist.
