Ji Zheyuan walked towards the bar while talking on the phone. "Where are you? I can't see you."
A man sitting at the bar waved his hand at him from a distance.
He put away his phone and approached, noticing that the man's eyes were slightly unfocused from intoxication.
As a close friend and business partner, Ji Zheyuan understood Shen Du's temperament well; aside from necessary socializing, he never initiated drinking alcohol.
"How surprising," he remarked, "to see you actively drinking."
Shen Du lightly traced the rim of his glass with his fingers and chuckled, "I suddenly felt like having a drink."
Ji Zheyuan wore a knowing expression. "Did you have a fight with Yao Nian?"
Shen Du didn't respond verbally but tilted his head back to finish the remaining liquid in his glass.
"You didn't bring me here just to watch you drink, did you? I have a curfew, you know."
"Have you talked to Xiao Lin about it?" Shen Du asked.
Ji Zheyuan snorted. "It's only because of your influence that she let me come without hesitation."
He ordered a glass of whiskey from the waiter, raised it to clink with Shen Du's glass, and said, "Now, tell me what's going on."
Shen Du looked weary; it seemed he had no one else to confide in besides Ji Zheyuan.
After listening, Ji Zheyuan slammed his hand on the table. "So you haven't even mentioned your relationship with Ren Ran to her?"
"It's my fault for not being honest with her, but what Yao Nian truly cares about isn't just that," Shen Du murmured.
"I want to promise her a future more than anyone else does, but she's still young, and I'm just not sure..."
Ji Zheyuan glanced at him. "Brother, I'm not trying to criticize you, but sometimes you're just too rational."
Shen Du squinted at the swirling remnants of liquor in his glass. "This afternoon at Huada, I saw a guy delivering something to her."
Ji Zheyuan was taken aback before breaking into a grin. "Oh? Are you feeling jealous? What was Yao Nian's reaction?"
Shen Du lowered his gaze and took another sip of his drink. "I don't know; I left."
Ji Zheyuan couldn't help but scold him. "Come on! You know how charming that girl is. If this keeps happening and you maintain this attitude, one day she might really be swept away by someone else, and then you'll regret it."
After leaving the bar, Shen Du took a taxi straight home. The drinks he had weren't enough to get him drunk but were sufficient to make his senses more sensitive and vulnerable, especially after hearing Ji Zheyuan's words.
He had always restrained his possessiveness towards Yao Nian, unwilling to bind her free spirit and authenticity within the constraints of their relationship. Even subconsciously, he placed himself in the role of an elder.
But that man from the afternoon was like a fuse, making him realize that after having experienced her beauty, how could he easily let her go?
With a fingerprint unlock, he opened the door and immediately spotted a pair of small white shoes at the entrance.
Shen Du's gaze froze for a moment as he quickly turned on the wall lamp, flooding the living room with light.
The young girl was curled up on the sofa, hugging a pillow, her eyes red-rimmed. Her legs were tucked beneath her, and she rested her chin on her knees, staring at him.
On that snowy night three years ago, she had looked just as pitiful, evoking a sense of tenderness in him.
Without even taking off his coat, he walked straight over, pulled her from the sunken sofa, and embraced her tightly.
A muffled voice came from her, tinged with nasal congestion: "You've been drinking."
Shen Du rested his forehead against the back of her head and replied gently, "I only had a few drinks."
Yao Nian wriggled out of his embrace, sniffled, and pulled a photograph from his coat pocket to hand it to him.
"What is it?" Shen Du asked as he took it, only to hear her say: "You asked me for a graduation photo earlier. Here it is."
"Weren't you the one who deleted it?" he began to say, but his words halted abruptly when he saw the photo.
In it, he was smiling at the camera while the girl looked at him with eyes that couldn't hide their fiery brilliance.
The man stared at the photograph in his hand, completely stunned.
