Yao Nian and Yao Zhan Dong were truly a father and daughter; their culinary skills could be described as nearly nonexistent. With Aunt Li absent, they had little choice but to order takeout.
Once they finished their meal, Yao Zhan Dong made a gesture as if to smoke, glanced at Yao Nian, and then quietly put the cigarette back in his pocket.
"Go ahead and smoke if you want," Yao Nian said as she tidied up the takeout boxes and put them into a bag.
"Never mind," Yao Zhan Dong replied. "How long are you staying in Huaibei?"
"I have exams coming up, so I took three days off. I'll be back at school tomorrow afternoon."
He nodded thoughtfully. "Since you're out here now, what are your plans next?"
"My daughter has really grown up," Yao Zhan Dong chuckled. "You sound just like a little adult now."
Yao Nian looked at him with a hint of exasperation.
He waved his hand dismissively. "Come on, I’m not going to let something trivial like this get me down. For now, I’ll focus on settling the accounts, and later I can work on a few projects without any problem."
Yao Nian reminded him about the card he had given her. "Here, take it back. I haven’t touched the money inside."
Yao Zhan Dong was taken aback for a moment.
"I don’t need that much money. Just pay back what you owe. I’m not looking for a life of luxury; having you around is enough."
For some reason, hearing those words stirred an impulse in Yao Zhan Dong to shed tears; perhaps it was because he was getting older.
Yao Nian added, "But you still need to give me living expenses."
By the way, he had held back all night but couldn't resist asking, "When did you start dating that boyfriend of yours?"
Yao Nian replied vaguely, "Just a little while ago."
"Is he from around here?"
"No, he’s from Shanghai."
"I'll drive you back to school tomorrow and maybe we can invite him out for dinner together?"
Yao Nian's expression clearly showed her panic. "Why are you in such a hurry? It's not like we're discussing marriage yet; there's no need to meet him."
The more she said that, the more curious Yao Zhan Dong became. During this time apart, his only concern had been for Yao Nian. She was his only daughter, and he worried about her encountering someone unreliable who might take advantage of her.
After the court session, Shen Du thought about how Yao Nian would be back tomorrow. Instead of heading straight home, he decided to make a trip to the supermarket.
Pushing the shopping cart, he wandered slowly through the aisles. In the food section, he picked up some snacks that Yao Nian usually enjoyed. After a moment's thought, he added two cans of fish gelatin and deer antler, along with some ingredients for soup.
Shen Du typically kept his meals simple, but the young girl had been studying hard lately and was clearly overworking her brain due to lack of sleep. He felt it was important to take good care of her.
While waiting in line to check out, Yao Nian sent him a message.
"Are you home yet?"
Shen Du typed back, "I'm at the supermarket, heading back soon. Are you going to sleep?"
"Not yet. I just miss you and wanted to talk."
He chuckled softly when he saw her message after completing the payment. Yao Nian never hesitated to express her reliance on him or her needs. When they spent time together, there was hardly any need for him to guess what she was thinking, which made Shen Du feel relaxed. It was one of the things he appreciated most about her.
In fact, he felt that his attachment to her was even stronger in comparison.
"Should I come pick you up tomorrow?"
Yao Nian replied with a pouting emoji.
