"President Yao said he would personally send me off, giving him a chance to show his worth."
Shen Du opened the trunk and placed two large bags inside the car. He sent her a voice message with a casual tone, "Don't sleep just yet; I'll call you when I get home."
The next day, Yao Nian yawned as she stepped out of her room. As she reached the staircase, she was startled by the figure shrouded in smoke on the sofa, instantly shaking off her drowsiness. A thick smell of smoke wafted through the air. Yao Zhandong leaned against the sofa, a full ashtray piled high with cigarette butts in front of him, making it hard for Yao Nian to see him clearly.
"Can't you control your smoking?" she frowned, covering her nose, noticing the dark circles under his eyes. "You didn't sit here all night, did you?"
Yao Zhandong extinguished the half-burnt cigarette in his hand. Under the heavy atmosphere, Yao Nian felt an impending storm brewing.
Sure enough, he squinted and spoke: "Last night, I called your mother."
Yao Nian's expression changed instantly as she swallowed hard. "What?"
Yao Zhandong slammed his hand on the coffee table and shouted, "This is outrageous!"
She sighed silently, wondering if it was just their bad luck as father and daughter that they couldn't even maintain a harmonious relationship for a day.
"It's good that you know," she tried to calm him down. "Dad, let me explain—it's my fault first—"
"Don't give me that nonsense!"
Yao Zhandong cut her off without giving her a chance to explain, launching into a tirade: "I wondered why he suddenly offered to help and even brought out such a large sum of money! I thought he was being grateful; turns out he has his eye on my daughter!"
Hearing such ungrateful words made Yao Nian's anger rise sharply. "What are you talking about? Do you know how much time and effort he spent on your matters? If it weren't for him, would you even be here right now?"
"I don't need it!" Yao Zhandong's voice trembled with anger. "You tell me honestly—did Shen Du threaten you using my situation?"
Yao Nian was at a loss for words and almost laughed. "Do you think this is a movie? I can't believe you even thought of that."
Yao Zhandong nodded vigorously and pulled out his phone to call Shen Du. "What kind of friend is he? I want to ask him what his intentions are."
Yao Nian immediately jumped over to snatch his phone away. "I liked him first! It was my initiative! If you have questions, just ask me!"
"So you're protecting him now?" Yao Zhandong laughed in anger. "Fine! Let me ask you—when did you two get together?"
"Get together?" Yao Nian frowned. "Can you not speak so harshly?"
"One is my friend; the other is my daughter. If you think my words are harsh, then don't do something so embarrassing!"
Yao Nian had wanted to have a proper conversation with him, but now she could hardly contain herself.
What was so ugly about it? I like him, and he likes me. Why can't we be together? Just because he's a few years older than me? Which law states that one cannot date someone older?
"Stop spouting nonsense!" Yao Zhandong shouted, pointing at her. "I will repay Shen Du's money even if I have to sell everything I own. You need to cut ties with him immediately!"
Yao Nian didn't hesitate for even a second. "No way."
Yao Zhandong's face turned ashen, his anger barely contained as he spoke each word slowly and deliberately. "I'll ask you one more time: are you going to break it off or not?"
Yao Nian met his gaze fearlessly. "Even if you ask a hundred times, the answer is still the same: no."
With a loud slap, a clear handprint appeared on her face, accompanied by a buzzing sensation. Both of them froze in shock.
The moment Yao Zhandong struck her, he regretted it; his hand lingered in the air, suddenly feeling lost.
Yao Nian calmly locked eyes with him. "Are you done being angry?"
As she walked upstairs, she added, "When you're ready to talk properly, I'll discuss it with you. But right now, I have to go to school."
