"Old Cheers?" Xu Jiayi was taken aback, thinking that the standards were a bit too high.
"Don't you like barbecue?" By the time Yao Nian finally parked the car in the space after the fifth attempt, she grabbed her bag and closed the car door. "You rarely come here; you deserve to be treated!"
Since they both started college, it had been rare for them to meet, but every time they did, there were endless topics to discuss. With still some time before dinner, Xu Jiayi suggested they go shopping for clothes, and so they strolled around the nearby area.
After visiting several women's clothing stores without finding anything satisfactory, they walked a bit further when Xu Jiayi's attention was caught by a model in the glass display window around the corner.
"Hey, that one looks pretty good. Shall we check it out?"
As soon as they entered the store, a sales associate quickly approached them. "Hello, ladies! Feel free to browse. If you find anything you like, you can try it on."
This store was significantly larger than the other women's clothing shops nearby. It had combined two storefronts and featured a French-inspired decor style with two levels. In the center stood a modern spiral staircase made of micro-cement.
The clothes on display were mostly in solid colors, with simple yet elegant designs. The fabric and quality were impressive, indicating that this store had good taste.
"What do you think of this one?" Xu Jiayi asked as she picked up a short trench coat.
Just as Yao Nian was about to respond, she heard the sound of high heels clicking on the stairs behind her. A woman approached them with a smile. "This is a designer piece from early autumn this year; the cut is quite nice."
Hearing that voice, Yao Nian turned around and was surprised to see Ren Ran.
Ren Ran paused briefly upon recognizing her but quickly regained her smile. Despite being Shen Du's ex-girlfriend, Yao Nian felt they weren't close enough for her to initiate a greeting.
Xu Jiayi was completely oblivious to the strange atmosphere between them and was very pleased with the trench coat she held. She quickly decided to buy it.
Ren Ran took the coat from her and tied a delicate ribbon around the packaging before offering her a discounted price.
"But didn't your sales associate just say that your store never has discounts?" Xu Jiayi asked while pulling out her phone.
Ren Ran glanced at Yao Nian and smiled. "Since you're a friend of Shen Du's, of course, there should be a discount."
Only then did Xu Jiayi sense something different in tone and quietly ask Yao Nian, "Do you know each other?"
Yao Nian remained silent but looked up at Ren Ran and offered a small smile. "Thank you."
Just as they were about to leave, Ren Ran called out to them. "Miss Yao, do you have some time?"
Yao Nian turned back with a puzzled expression.
Ren Ran smiled lightly. "There's no time like the present; I'd like to chat with you for a moment."
Yao Nian didn't understand what Ren Ran wanted to discuss but felt an undeniable curiosity about what she had to say.
Xu Jiayi noticed her hesitation and pointed outside. "I'll go buy some milk tea. You can come find me when you're ready."
In the women's clothing store, Ren Ran placed the freshly brewed coffee in front of Yao Nian. "I didn't add too much sugar; I wasn't sure if you would like it."
Yao Nian remained still. "Perhaps we can get straight to the point?"
Ren Ran sat down across from her, her smile fading. "I'll be direct then. I came back to the country for Shen Du."
Yao Nian was not surprised; she simply found it amusing. "Then aren't you looking for the wrong person?"
Ren Ran's hands lightly cradled the coffee cup. "I broke up with Shen Du. I don't know if he mentioned it to you, but it wasn't a big issue. At that time, I was too proud and never thought that one day I would truly lose him."
Yao Nian remained silent, curious to see what else she would reveal.
"Dating can be carefree," Ren Ran took a small sip of her coffee, speaking slowly and deliberately, "but marriage... it requires matching social standings."
