After finishing her fourth year, Lin Mo found that there were hardly any classes left at school. She decided to stay in the city for a while to start her first round of spring recruitment. Fang Yi, being the cherished only daughter of her family, was naturally expected by her mother to stay local after graduation and begin preparing for civil service exams.
Yao Nian was busier than ever at this stage. In addition to the upcoming legal examination, she had decided, after discussing with Shen Du, to pursue graduate studies. Shen Du didn’t require her to have an exceptionally high level of education; if the young girl didn’t mind studying, it would be fine for her to stay at school a bit longer.
Although he could help, Shen Du had no plans to pave the way for Yao Nian. Whether she chose to become a teacher or follow in his footsteps as a lawyer, all he wanted was for her to select a career she loved. Any other issues would be taken care of by him.
Yao Nian deliberately asked him, “What if I don’t want to work?”
“Then don’t,” Shen Du replied, flipping through her recently completed business economics notes and lifting his gaze from the book. “I can afford it.”
Yao Nian huffed, “I don’t believe you men and your nonsense. What if one day you dump me? Then I wouldn’t even have the ability to support myself!”
Shen Du shot her a glance, closed the book, and said, “Come with me to the notary office tomorrow. The agreement has already been drafted; you just need to sign it.”
Yao Nian straightened her back and declared with great resolve, “The poor do not accept food offered out of pity!”
During her preparation for the legal exam, Yao Nian had turned Shen Du’s office into her personal study room. After all, it was hard to find someone like him who could provide immediate answers like a walking reference book.
Watching the young girl run back and forth between school and the law firm every day while stubbornly refusing to drive his car, Shen Du eventually consulted Yao Zhandong and decided to buy her a car.
One day, Yao Nian stood at the school gate on tiptoe, looking around for Shen Du’s car but couldn’t find it after searching for quite some time. Suddenly, a pastel pink vehicle blocked her path.
Just as she was about to complain about someone’s lack of manners, the car door opened and Shen Du stepped out.
Her eyes widened in surprise. “You got a new car? But… isn’t this color a bit too flashy for you?”
Shen Du smiled as he handed her the car keys. “It’s for you. Why don’t you give it a try?”
Yao Nian opened her mouth in shock. “Wait, why did you suddenly buy me a car?”
“I discussed it with President Yao,” Shen Du said as he opened the door for her to get into the driver’s seat while he took the passenger seat. “You’re graduating soon; you won’t miss this little bit of time.”
Shen Du recalled Yao Zhandong’s reaction when he told him about this decision. He had sighed repeatedly over the phone, saying, “Just spoil her; sooner or later she’ll be spoiled rotten.”
Gripping the steering wheel, Yao Nian felt unsure of how to proceed. “I’m curious—your own car is so low-key; why did you choose such a flashy brand for me?”
Shen Du fastened her seatbelt and replied, “I thought this color suited you well; since I bought it, just enjoy it.”
Yao Nian adjusted the seat forward cautiously and gently pressed down on the accelerator. Listening to the engine emit a deep and rich sound made her exclaim in awe, “Wow! Suddenly I feel like I’m being pampered!”
April arrived in the blink of an eye, and the date marked on the calendar was drawing ever closer.
Yao Nian had prepared a gift for Shen Du well in advance, and as the day approached, she couldn't help but feel a bit anxious. She had made up her mind to propose to Shen Du on this day. She wanted to give the man who had waited for her for three long years a definitive identity before graduation.
The day before, Shen Du had an unusual break from classes. After parking his car in the underground garage, he noticed a crookedly parked pale pink car in his designated spot. He couldn't help but think that the young girl's parking skills had not improved at all.
When Shen Du got home, the living room was dark, with only a faint light seeping through the slightly ajar bedroom door. Yao Nian was staring blankly at a ring box when the door was pushed open unexpectedly. Startled, she quickly shoved what she was holding under her pillow. "Y-you're back already?"
Noticing her flustered expression, Shen Du raised an eyebrow in suspicion. "What were you doing?"
"Nothing!" Yao Nian replied, avoiding his gaze. "Why are you home so early today?"
