The law firm had just closed for the day.
Shen Du rolled up his sleeves and took out a set of bed linens from the wardrobe, preparing to change the sheets he had taken off that morning but hadn’t yet replaced.
Yao Nian's expression changed instantly as she rushed to stop him. "Let me do it! You go take a shower!"
The girl seemed unusually restless that evening. Just as Shen Du was about to ask her what was wrong, she forcefully pushed him into the bathroom.
Once the sound of running water filled the air, Yao Nian hurriedly stuffed the ring box from under her pillow into the bottom drawer of the nightstand, finally letting out a quiet sigh of relief.
That night, Shen Du watched as Yao Nian yawned repeatedly yet still clutched her phone tightly, lost in thought. "Why aren’t you sleeping when you’re this tired?" he wondered.
"I'm not sleepy! You go ahead and sleep," Yao Nian insisted, forcing herself to stay awake.
Shen Du reached out and turned off the light. In the darkness, he caught a glimpse of her illuminated profile by the glow of her phone and smiled silently to himself.
Time passed, and after listening to Shen Du’s steady breathing, Yao Nian confirmed he was fast asleep before quietly slipping out of bed.
She moved slowly, carefully pulling open the bottom drawer of the nightstand. When she reached in, her hand met only emptiness.
Furrowing her brow in confusion, she glanced at Shen Du's back before turning on her phone’s flashlight to peer into the drawer.
"This is strange; it was just here!" she muttered to herself. "Could it have fallen out without me noticing?"
Not willing to give up, she shone the light under the bed and crouched down to look for it.
Suddenly, a voice filled with amusement broke through the silence above her. "What are you looking for?"
Startled by the unexpected sound, Yao Nian jerked her head up and bumped it against the bed frame with a loud thud.
"Ah!!!"
"Hey!" Shen Du quickly turned on the light and pulled Yao Nian out from under the bed. "Let me see; did you hurt yourself?"
Yao Nian grimaced in pain, covering her head with a pained expression as she glared at him. "I think I might have knocked my brain loose!"
Shen Du gently rubbed some ointment on her head while suppressing a laugh. "What are you doing sneaking around in the middle of the night?"
Thinking about that mysteriously missing ring, Yao Nian couldn’t help but glance under the bed again.
Shen Du set down the ointment and pulled out the ring box from beneath his pillow, raising an eyebrow meaningfully. "Is this what you were looking for?"
Yao Nian froze in shock. "When did you take this?!"
Upon returning, she sensed something was off. If you were going to hide it, at least do a better job; it was too easy to uncover. The surprise she had meticulously prepared was spoiled, and Yao Nian's brows drooped, her mood plummeting to the depths of disappointment.
"You’re no fun," she said sulkily. "I was planning to give you a surprise."
Shen Du laughed as he wrapped his arms around her from behind, kissing her flushed ear tips. "It seems like a little girl is eager to marry me."
"I'm graduating soon," Yao Nian replied, pressing her lips together. "Besides, who says proposing is a man's privilege?"
Shen Du turned her to face him, his gaze serious. "It's not about privilege; it's about the ceremony I need to give you."
With that, he took the ring from the box and slipped it onto his own middle finger.
Yao Nian tilted her head and smiled. "So does this mean my proposal was successful?"
Shen Du raised an eyebrow. "Of course not."
"Then give it back." With that, Yao Nian lunged forward to snatch the ring from his hand.
Shen Du chuckled and raised his hand high, easily keeping it out of her reach. "How can you expect to take back something I’m giving you?"
