Yao Nian concluded her ten-day graduation trip and hurried to the law firm, carrying a large box of gifts. She returned two days early without informing Shen Du, planning to surprise him by suddenly appearing in front of him.
Breathing heavily, Yao Nian stepped out of the elevator and glanced around. She greeted Xia Mixue, who was dozing off at the front desk. "Sister Mixue, why are there so few people in the office today?"
Xia Mixue jolted awake and quickly smiled upon seeing Yao Nian. "You're back! They're all in a meeting upstairs. Do you want me to let Lawyer Shen know you're here?"
"No, no, I'll wait for him in the office," Yao Nian replied, handing her the brownies she had bought downstairs. "Here, I brought this for you."
"Ah!" Xia Mixue exclaimed, touched. "You didn't have to be so thoughtful! How did you know I was just hungry?"
She stuck out her tongue playfully. "Well, I’ll head upstairs now."
During the time leading up to the bar exam, Yao Nian had almost come to Shen Du's office every day. Over time, most of the people at the firm recognized her. Although she had Shen Du's connection, the young girl was down-to-earth, sweet-talking everyone with her polite demeanor and bright smile, making her well-liked by all.
Yao Nian tossed her box on the front desk and headed straight for Shen Du's office, happily imagining his expression when he returned from the meeting and saw her unexpectedly there.
Just as she was enjoying this thought, the conference room door suddenly swung open. A familiar face peeked out, anxiously scanning the entrance.
When he spotted Yao Nian walking by, he paused for a moment. "You're the intern who just arrived, right?"
"Me?" Yao Nian pointed at herself. "I’m not—"
Before she could finish her sentence, he interrupted urgently. "Come in and help make some tea! That damn Lu didn’t inform us he’d be taking leave—clients are already here!"
Yao Nian thought that helping to make tea wasn’t a big deal, so she followed him into the conference room.
As soon as she stepped inside, the lively discussion that had been ongoing abruptly fell silent at the sight of her.
Locking eyes with Shen Du, who was seated at the center of the conference table, Yao Nian raised an eyebrow playfully.
"What are you standing there for?" Shen Du pointed toward the tea area without any awareness of what was happening. "Hurry up! Everyone is waiting."
She rolled up her sleeves and jogged eagerly into the tea area.
Ji Zheyuan stared blankly for a moment before suddenly breaking into a fit of coughing.
The others exchanged glances but dared not speak; instead, they all looked toward Shen Du.
The man remained calm, pausing only for a second before returning his gaze to continue speaking as if nothing had happened.
With many people in attendance at the meeting, Yao Nian carried two cups of tea at a time back and forth three times without managing to serve everyone. The atmosphere in the conference room grew increasingly awkward.
"The parties involved have undergone multiple interrogations by law enforcement; we must—"
Crash!
A sound of shattering glass echoed from the tea area.
Shen Du's voice faltered as he lifted his head from the documents, quickly pushing his chair back to stand up. "Wait for me."
Ji Zheyuan glanced towards the tea room and pointed at the instigator, lowering his voice to ask, "Yu Xiang, what are you doing? Why did you bring her here to make tea?"
The boy's eyes were clear but foolish. "Ji Lu, isn't she the intern?"
Ji Zheyuan facepalmed in disbelief. "Intern my foot!"
"Huh? Then who is she?"
The girl sitting next to him looked at him with a 'good luck with that' expression. "She is Shen Lu's fiancée."
Yu Xiang's expression visibly cracked.
In those brief seconds, he had already thought of a title for his resignation letter: "On How Much Trouble I Can Cause at Work by Mistaking the Boss's Fiancée for a Tea Girl."
Then an extremely shocking scene unfolded in the conference room.
Their usually stern boss personally brought out two cups of tea and placed them in front of one of the people present—Yu Xiang.
A chill ran down his spine as he hurriedly stood up, hands trembling as he took the cups. "Shen... Shen Lu, I'll do it myself."
Shen Du sat back down and continued the meeting, twirling a pen absentmindedly while a faint smile tugged at the corners of his lips.
After leaving the conference room, Yao Nian was in Shen Du's office fiddling with the coffee machine he had bought while reflecting on his earlier reaction.
It seemed like he didn't have any special response at all. How disappointing.
Feeling disheartened, she thought she should have just gone home instead of wasting time on such a big person.
With a fingerprint unlock, the door clicked open.
Squatting in front of the low cabinet searching for coffee beans, Yao Nian turned around upon hearing movement. Had they finished so quickly?
The man took three steps in two strides until he stood before her, snatching the plastic bag from her hands and tossing it onto the counter. Then she felt a tightness around her waist, and before she knew it, he leaned down to capture her lips.
There was no warning; his tongue surged in boldly, sweeping through her mouth with abandon. His breath was heavy as he sucked on her lips with a force that was both intense and rough. Yao Nian found herself unable to resist, her legs turning weak beneath her as she nearly lost her footing.
Shen Du held her securely, carrying her to the sofa, propping himself up with one hand on the backrest as he deepened the kiss that felt more intimate than a wedding night.
In the midst of this passionate moment, Yao Nian caught a glimpse of the slightly ajar office door. Suddenly feeling embarrassed, she pushed against him. The door—it's not closed!
Shen Du acted as if he hadn't noticed, gradually slowing his movements while slowly licking her slightly swollen lips.
Why did my sister come back early? Just then, Ji Zheyuan entered the room for a welcome gathering and was greeted by the sight before him. He quickly covered his eyes and exclaimed, "Oh no!"
He abruptly halted in his tracks, turned on his heel, and thoughtfully closed the door behind him.
Outside, Ji Zheyuan's teasing voice rang out: "Ahem, just a reminder to you two, the Party and the people are watching. This isn't a place for brothel games."
Yao Nian felt her ears burn with embarrassment and immediately wriggled free from Shen Du's embrace. "Lawyer Shen, this is a public place! Can we please be mindful of our surroundings?"
Shen Du raised an eyebrow, looking quite pleased. "Who am I affecting by kissing my own wife?"
His words left Yao Nian speechless. She quietly moved to the floor-to-ceiling window, preparing to continue her unfinished coffee project.
Shen Du wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder as he asked, "What made you come back early all of a sudden?"
Yao Nian pressed the button on her coffee machine, a smile tugging at her lips. "I was afraid someone missed me too much."
