Marbury unconsciously followed the man's heavy, mechanical footsteps, as if being pulled forward by an invisible force. Their figures appeared somewhat eerie under the silvery moonlight, which filtered through the overcast sky, casting mottled shadows on the ground. The clouds in the night sky resembled dark waves, occasionally surging to obscure the solitary moon, adding a sense of oppression to the moment.
The light rain pattered against them, chillingly cold, like a refreshing spring that penetrated Marbury's skin, sending a shiver along his veins to his limbs and organs. This chill should have made him feel cold; however, Marbury found it brought an indescribable comfort, as if this icy rain could wash away the pain and despair that had long accumulated within him.
His mood became strangely complex, torn between two opposing forces. On one hand, he felt a profound sadness about his life, family, and the unpredictability of fate; he knew he had been driven to a dead end by life. On the other hand, there was an unusual excitement that made his blood run hot, as if some hidden power was awakening within him. He did not understand why he felt this way; this complex emotion intertwined in his chest left him both in pain and inexplicably hopeful.
"Am I going crazy...?" Marbury whispered to himself, yet his footsteps did not falter. He knew how absurd and unwise it was to follow this stranger; the man's presence was filled with foreboding and evil. However, deep down inside, he could not resist. That twisted hope made him begin to question whether he had truly found an opportunity to change his fate.
He looked down at his trembling hands; as the rain fell upon them, Marbury felt as if he were living an impossible dream. He had thought countless times about escaping his situation, wanting to flee from endless loss and failure, but each time reality had mercilessly crushed him. He had repeatedly told himself that life was irreparably broken and that there was no chance for change. Yet now, following this madman, he felt a ridiculous belief rising within him—perhaps this time he could truly change his destiny.
"Can I really change?" he asked himself, his gaze sweeping over the man's gaunt figure again. The man's steps were light yet resolute, as if each stride was filled with confidence and purpose. He walked ahead, guiding Marbury through the cold night toward an unknown and dark future.
Marbury could not stop following him nor could he quell the doubts in his heart. He knew this path was fraught with danger and uncertainty, but despair left him with no other choice. Perhaps this was a mad gamble—one that even he was unsure whether he could win.
"No matter the outcome, I have no way back," he silently told himself. With each step forward, his heart grew more chaotic yet tinged with an indescribable anticipation.
Marbury closely followed the man, his eyes fixed on that emaciated back. The figure began to blur before him as if being swallowed and distorted by the surrounding darkness. The man's pace quickened; his movements seemed increasingly out of sync with reality, teetering on the edge between real and surreal—each step carried a strange aura. Panic began to rise within Marbury; yet he found himself unable to stop following him.
They traversed narrow alleys where the buildings grew increasingly dilapidated; graffiti marred walls and crumbling bricks made this area seem like a forgotten corner of the world. The dim lights in the alley flickered sporadically; puddles on the damp ground reflected faint moonlight. Their footsteps echoed in the still air alongside the soft patter of rain hitting the ground, creating an eerie atmosphere.
As they ventured deeper into the alleys, the clamor of downtown faded away; desolation enveloped them as human presence dwindled. No one walked these streets anymore—not even the homeless who usually lingered by the roadside seemed to have vanished without a trace. Darkness became the predominant color here, as if all life had been expelled from this place—only they remained wandering in endless shadows.
Marbury's heartbeat quickened; fear began to creep into his mind bit by bit. His palms grew sweaty and his steps hesitated slightly, yet he could not stop pursuing that man's path. Watching that figure gradually merge into darkness ahead made him increasingly uneasy. The air around them thickened as if something sinister lurked nearby, quietly drawing closer to him.
Suddenly, a strong stench assaulted Marbury's senses, causing him to furrow his brow. The odor was heavy and fishy, reminiscent of rotten meat that had been buried in the ground for an extended period, now unearthed and exposed to the air. The foul smell seeped into his nostrils with the dampness, irritating his senses. Instinctively, Marbury covered his nose, but the repulsive scent infiltrated every crevice, making his stomach churn as if he were on the verge of vomiting.
"What on earth is this place?" Alarm bells rang in Marbury's mind, fear gripping his chest like a cold hand. He sensed that he should not proceed any further; it was too dangerous and too dark here, as if some incomprehensible evil force lurked in the shadows. Yet his feet did not stop; despair and desire intertwined within him, preventing him from turning back.
The figure of a man continued to sway ahead, his movements no longer resembling those of an ordinary person but rather becoming twisted and bizarre. Each time Marbury tried to approach, the man would swiftly vanish around a corner, leaving only a fleeting shadow behind.
"Wait!" Marbury finally shouted, his voice trembling. He felt as though he was stepping into an inescapable abyss but could not halt this terrifying pursuit. The surrounding darkness seemed almost alive, gradually closing in on him and enveloping both him and the man in its grasp, an invisible pressure suffocating him.
And that putrid odor lingered in the air, like a scent from the depths of hell, constantly reminding Marbury that he was heading toward an irreversible conclusion.
