This is the letter that Mom wrote to Dad before she went missing. After reading it, Yuejiang looked sorrowful and said, "So my parents had this complicated history with your Father. But why didn’t Mom go to find you in the end? Instead, she ended up in the pond." 0

Shao Chong furrowed his brow, deep in thought. After a moment, Yusheng spoke up, "Yuejiang, didn’t you say that it was raining heavily the day your mom left, and they had a very intense argument?" 0

"I understand now!" Shao Chong exclaimed as realization dawned on him. "Lin Hai must have noticed Mu Lian’s unusual behavior. During their argument, Mu Lian probably revealed the truth. Lin Hai couldn’t allow his crimes to be exposed; after all, rumors could ruin him completely. So he firmly opposed Mu Lian’s actions, and in her anger and guilt, she stormed out." 0

"Then Lin Hai chased after her. Mu Lian stood her ground, which finally pushed him over the edge, and he killed her. Afterward, he disposed of her body in the pond and claimed that Mu Lian had run away and was missing?" 0

Yusheng shared his own speculation, his eyes glinting with hatred. "He harmed his own friend and then killed his lover. I can hardly believe that the teacher I respected like a father is actually such a cruel monster!" 0

"The thirteenth painting of Water Lilies that Aunt Li saw," Shao Chong said slowly, "was actually completed before that series titled Finding Water Lily." 0

"I think Lin Hai stumbled upon the exposed skull at the bottom of the water years later and painted that piece. Its theme wasn’t Water Lilies but rather a skull under the moonlight. He mimicked her style to imply that this painting was related to Mu Lian." 0

"I can understand Dad's feelings," Yuejiang said, resting her hand on the cabinet as she struggled to organize her chaotic and sorrowful thoughts. "He lived his life in guilt and remorse. He wanted to reveal the truth but was too afraid. That’s why he set up this situation—to present this painting before his death, revealing through layers of concealment his sins and longing for forgiveness." 0

"If that's the case, even if Aunt Li hadn’t killed him that night, Lin Hai would have surely committed suicide," Shao Chong lamented. "What a foolish woman." 0

"Yusheng, can you understand Dad's feelings?" Yuejiang asked Yusheng. "He has been suppressing something inside him; he tried to express it. All these events together are actually Father’s final work. He completed this creation with his life; Finding Water Lily is just part of it, and its complete title should be Atonement." 0

"Every artist has a madness within them, and their desires are particularly intense. No artist ever believes they have fully expressed themselves; if they did, they would likely face death with ease, without any attachments. To help us understand all of this, Lin Hai has put in such great effort." 0

"I think my father ultimately just wanted me to know that he killed my mother, so I could find her remains and be buried with her. But he never expected to find such a letter in my mother's cabinet, detailing everything that happened." 0

"He tried to force a woman who did not love him to stay with him, attempting to kill his rival. After she discovered his crimes, he murdered her as well." 0

"He spent his life tormented by regret and guilt. So before he died, he revealed the truth through a piece of art, as if he were finally voicing the words he had held inside for a lifetime—a longing for redemption. That must be how it is," summarized Shao Chong. 0

"You are wrong!" Lin Yuejiang clutched the letter left by Mu Lian tightly, tears streaming down unconsciously. "There is one thing my father never understood throughout his painful life. If only he had known another truth, perhaps everything that followed would never have happened." 0

Inside the letter was a photograph of Lin Hai from his university days, his expression slightly awkward but his posture upright like a young sapling. 0

The letter had an aged feel to it, made from the same stationery as the one used by my mother, both bearing the emblem of the same region. 0
