In the dimly lit warehouse, the girl leaned against the wall, her eyes red and silent.
"Is that all?" I questioned sternly, my tone icy, as if interrogating a suspect.
She flinched slightly but held her head high, saying, "That's it, really."
I took a step closer, invading her space, reaching towards the bulging area of her school uniform. She recoiled in terror, hitting the wall with a dull thud.
The girl's name was Bai Qingxia, a student from my school.
Cold and distant, she was known as the aloof school beauty, an untouchable presence.
Yet today, this untouchable figure was cornered by me in such a manner.
My tone softened suddenly. "I know about your family situation."
She looked up sharply, her eyes filled with shock and disbelief, as if witnessing something unbelievable.
In my previous life, Bai Qingxia had done the same thing in a supermarket, but out of consideration for her feelings, I chose to look the other way.
As a result, she had been involved in a car accident right after leaving.
So this time, I needed to buy some time and deliver a stern lecture to the school beauty.
I rose from my chair and walked over to Bai Qingxia, looking down at her from above.
The yellow light in the warehouse cast shadows on her face, making her pallor even more pronounced.
The clutter piled in the corner was covered in dust, and a musty smell lingered in the air. I waved my hand in front of her, "Are you back with us?"
Bai Qingxia's gaze shifted from confusion to wariness. She bit her lip, silent as a startled little creature.
I pulled a pillbox from my pocket, the very one she had stolen on the surveillance footage. "Special medication, quite expensive, isn't it?"
She suddenly looked up, her eyes filled with shock and doubt. Instinctively, she reached out to grab it but hesitated mid-air.
I withdrew the pillbox and returned it to my pocket. "Your mother’s illness requires long-term use of this medication."
Bai Qingxia's shoulders trembled slightly as she lowered her head, her long eyelashes casting shadows over her emotions.
"How... how do you know?" Her voice was faint, almost like a whisper, trembling slightly.
"I know more than you think," I replied, turning to face the surveillance screen, pointing at the playback. "Stealing is not something a good student should do."
Bai Qingxia clutched the hem of her clothes tightly, her knuckles turning white. "I didn't..."
I interrupted her, "I know your mother won't make it to next month." My gaze remained fixed on the screen, my tone calm, yet it detonated like a bomb in Bai Qingxia's heart.
She shot her head up, eyes wide with disbelief as she stared at me.
The warehouse was silent except for the chaotic background noise from the supermarket on the surveillance footage.
Bai Qingxia's breathing quickened, her chest rising and falling violently.
I turned to face her terrified gaze directly.
"I know about your mother's illness, your family's situation, and also... you." I paused, observing her reaction. The fear in her eyes deepened, her lips trembled slightly but no sound escaped.
"You don't need to be afraid. I won't tell anyone," I said as I moved closer to her, softening my tone. "I just want to help you." I took an envelope from my pocket and handed it to her. "Inside is some money, enough for your mother's medication this month."
Bai Qingxia hesitated for a moment, not reaching for it. "Why... why do you want to help me?"
I smiled gently. "Perhaps I just don't want to see a young life wither away." I pressed the envelope into her hand. "Take it as... a small act of kindness from a stranger."
Bai Qingxia clutched the envelope tightly, lowering her head as silent tears streamed down her cheeks.
Her shoulders shook slightly, as if she were suppressing something. The dim light in the warehouse illuminated her lonely, frail figure.
I sighed softly and turned to leave the warehouse.
Once outside, I pulled out my phone and dialed a number. "Hello, Dad, it's me. Can you check on Zhao Zhiqiang's recent activities for me? Especially his contact with Bai Qingxia..." I glanced up at the gray sky. I was determined to change Bai Qingxia's fate.
The next day, I spotted Li Mei in the school hallway. She was chatting with Bai Qingxia, both of them wearing smiles.
Li Mei had her hair tied up in a high ponytail, radiating youthful energy. Upon seeing me, she greeted me cheerfully, "Lu Yuanqiu, good morning!"
Bai Qingxia glanced at me, her eyes darting away momentarily before she nodded slightly in acknowledgment.
I noticed that her complexion looked much better than yesterday; it seemed she had managed to get the medicine.
"Good morning," I replied to Li Mei and then turned to Bai Qingxia. "How are you feeling?"
Bai Qingxia paused for a moment before realizing what I meant. She nodded gently, "Much better, thank you."
"You're welcome." I smiled and said, "If you ever have any difficulties, feel free to tell me."
I noticed Li Mei curiously observing me and Bai Qingxia. I winked at her, signaling her not to ask too many questions.
Li Mei pouted and whispered to Bai Qingxia, "When did you and Lu Yuanqiu get so close?"
Bai Qingxia's cheeks turned slightly red as she lowered her head, remaining silent.
I chuckled and patted Li Mei on the shoulder. "Stop gossiping; class is about to start." With that, I turned and walked toward the classroom.
As I reached the classroom door, I glanced back to see Li Mei holding Bai Qingxia's hand, chattering away about something.
Bai Qingxia wore a faint smile, but her gaze occasionally drifted in my direction.
I withdrew my gaze and entered the classroom, taking my seat.
I pulled out my textbook, but my thoughts wandered to Zhao Zhiqiang.
I needed to find a way to stop Zhao Zhiqiang from getting close to Bai Qingxia as soon as possible; otherwise, the tragedy would repeat itself.
I picked up a pen and wrote "Zhao Zhiqiang" in my notebook, drawing a large question mark beside it.
