Wu Rong's gaze turned sharp, and the atmosphere around them immediately shifted. Nina froze in fear, but her expression showed no sign of backing down.
"I've said I won't go back, and I won't. I came to Flower City just to take my girlfriend on a trip, not to see you all. Step aside!"
Nina trembled under his fierce tone, glancing reluctantly at Rao Jie with a slight frown before returning her gaze to Wu Rong. "What’s this? You’re not doing math research anymore? Now you’re just dating young girls? Are you still the Wu Rong who wanted to make a name in the Mathematics Community? Or have you given up on everything from the past and decided to be an ordinary, mediocre person?"
Wu Rong remained expressionless as he stared at Nina for a moment without speaking. However, the way he tightly held Rao Jie’s hand revealed a hint of his emotions.
Wu Xin couldn’t hold back any longer and stepped forward. "Nina, how can you say that? What do you mean by 'young girl'? This is my good sister, who is also recognized by our family as a future sister-in-law. Please show some respect! And my brother hasn’t neglected his research; just recently in our country, he won an impressive math award. He’s not what you say—someone who has given up and will become an insignificant person."
Nina shot a sharp look at her. "An award from your country... Ha! What does that even mean?"
Wu Xin was so enraged that she gasped for breath, unable to suppress her eye roll. "Brother, don’t listen to her. You two should go back first; I’ll come find you tomorrow afternoon." She quickly exchanged glances with Rao Jie.
Receiving the signal, Rao Jie immediately took Wu Rong's hand and said, "Let’s go."
But before they could take a step, Nina stepped forward to block their way. "I said you can’t leave! Wu Rong, you must come back with me; the teacher is in the hospital, he..."
"Nina, why do you think you have any say in my life?" Wu Rong replied coldly, enunciating each word.
Nina was taken aback, her face revealing hurt that she could not hide.
Rao Jie looked at Nina with confusion; initially thinking she was an old colleague of Wu Rong's, now she felt something was off. Was she overthinking it?
Wu Rong's words seemed to strike a fatal blow, allowing them to successfully escape Nina's clutches and return to the hotel.
On the way back, Rao Jie only asked who Nina was.
Wu Rong explained that Nina was his companion during his research at Cambridge; they worked together under a professor on a challenging mathematical problem. Strictly speaking, they could only be considered former colleagues.
Seeing that Wu Rong was reluctant to discuss his past, Rao Jie hesitated and didn’t press further.
After returning, Rao Jie sensed something was off with Wu Rong. Although his behavior seemed largely unchanged from usual, she was very sensitive to his emotional shifts.
If something bothered Wu Rong, he would usually express it openly; he wasn’t someone who would bottle things up. Occasionally he would hold back around Rao Jie, but this situation felt different.
This was something from Wu Rong's past that Rao Jie didn’t know about.
It seemed connected to why Wu Rong had returned home.
Rao Jie recalled hearing from Wu Xin that Wu Rong had originally studied at Harvard and became a teaching assistant at 24. He later followed his professor to Cambridge for further research and had always been his professor's prized student.
Wu Rong should have continued his research abroad, but suddenly he returned home and was brought by Ye Ming to Yun Cheng University to teach while leveraging its resources for his mathematical studies—clearly aiming for development in his home country.
