The next day, as soon as class ended, Yunsu hurried to the Cool Drink Hall where she had met A Qi the day before.
A Qi had already arrived, dressed in a uniform resembling that of a waitress, with the words "Warmth Foot Spa" emblazoned on it. Was she working here? Yunsu pondered to herself.
A Qi ordered a cup of Ice Mountain but did not touch it. Instead, she stared intently at it as it slowly melted. Even when Yunsu sat down in front of her, her gaze remained fixed on the cup.
"No matter how strong something is, once it leaves its suitable environment, it becomes fragile."
She scraped a bit of the already melted ice cream with her finger and popped it into her mouth. Then she looked at Yunsu and said, "Just a moment ago, it was incredibly hard; even this steel spoon struggled to scrape off a bit. But now, I can easily enjoy it with my finger." With that, she started eating.
"That's because it melted; the temperature changed."
"She's back."
"Who?"
"Lin Xue."
"Lin Xue didn't come with me."
"You sly girl, I know you did that on purpose yesterday. You must have learned that secret."
"What secret?"
"Le Xue died in the bathroom. I know she has always been there, never leaving. Now she can finally return; that Lin Xue is her."
“She just looks a bit like Le Xue…”
“No, no…” A Qi's voice began to tremble. “It’s not just a resemblance; she is her. I owe Le Xue an apology. Although we only spent a short month together, she truly was my dear friend, and I have let her down.”
“No matter what you did in the past, that was two years ago.”
A Qi stopped crying and took out a one-inch photo from her wallet, handing it to Yunsu.
So that’s what she took.
To Yunsu's surprise, the two people in the photo did share some similarities, but they were not as strikingly alike as she had imagined; this was quite unexpected.
“Is there any connection between them?” A Qi asked.
“They might be half-sisters.”
“Might? So they themselves are still unaware?”
“I believe they should have clarity by now; what’s certain is that Le Xue is already aware.”
A Qi looked at her in confusion.
“Lin Xue was attacked in the bathroom and nearly lost her life.”
“I guess it’s because Le Xue felt too lonely and wanted her sister to keep her company.”
"It’s impossible, Lin Xue is definitely not that kind of person."
"Then let her sister find the one who plotted to kill her!"
A Qi gazed at Yunsu with almost unbearable pain, eventually bowing her head deeply and sobbing silently.
"I suffer from an illness. Before I entered university, I attempted suicide twice." As she spoke, she removed a wide bracelet from her left wrist, revealing two pale scars. "I didn’t truly wish to die; I just enjoyed the sight of blood gushing out and relished the strange 'pleasure' that pain brought. The doctor diagnosed me with self-harm disorder. During my school years, nearly a third of my time was spent in a sanatorium."
"And you also suffer from paranoia, right?"
A Qi nodded. "In order to escape that sanatorium, I actively cooperated with the treatment." With that, she laughed loudly without restraint, prompting a staff member to check on them from the adjoining room.
"My memory is exceptional; if I weren’t ill, I would surely be a genius. The college entrance examination was not difficult for me, and my parents hoped I would enroll and lead a normal life. Coupled with the doctor’s diagnosis report, I eventually entered university and performed well. Only then did my parents feel at ease, as they both had busy schedules."
"At first, school life felt novel to me, but it gradually became unfamiliar. I began to show signs of relapse, but I was determined not to return to that sanatorium. I tried my best to hide my symptoms. Le Xue thought I was just shy and often tried to cheer me up by taking me out for fun. For the first time in my life, I experienced what it meant to have a friend. Her smile was always a ray of sunshine in my heart. Her enthusiasm greatly benefited my condition, but soon after, problems began to arise. On the brick walls of Building Six, which isolated us from the outside world, there were dense patches of glass embedded in them. At the bottom of the wall was a corner, and ahead stood a row of Birch Trees."
"Every night, when everything was shrouded in darkness, heh heh, that feeling of peeking into a building was truly indescribable. The sense of security brought by being enveloped in darkness is self-evident; I became completely intoxicated by that place. All I had to do was sit quietly and remain still to know all the secrets hidden from others—who undermined whom, who had an ambiguous relationship with their mentor, including who was having an affair in the bushes... Hehe..." A Qi's tone carried a hint of pride.
"Including who killed Le Xue?"
Yunsu's sharp question silenced her instantly; her expression turned ashen like dead ashes.
