The woman cast a suspicious glance at them.
Yunsu rushed in, and although they were in the elevator, the woman continued to scrutinize them with a puzzled expression. Nevertheless, Yunsu pressed the button for the 10th floor in front of her.
Standing at the door of Lin Xue's home, both of them held their breath.
What was happening inside? Was anyone there or was it empty? Was A Qi inside?
A series of questions flashed through Yunsu's mind.
She pressed her ear against the door to listen for any sounds within, but it was unnecessary; just as her ear touched the door, it swung open.
The door was not locked, merely ajar.
When the door opened, it was eerily silent, only a faint buzzing sound could be heard.
They tiptoed inside. The living room was bright, and two people were seated on the sofa. In front of them on the coffee table was a tape recorder; the buzzing sound emanated from it.
Lin Xue's mother sat on the sofa against the wall, her gaze vacant and despondent. A Qi occupied the seat to her left, facing the tape recorder.
Clearly, something had transpired between these two, and the answer lay within that tape.
But what exactly was recorded?
Upon seeing Yunsu and San Zhua enter, Lin Xue's mother suddenly convulsed. Yunsu immediately noticed the medicine bottle tightly clutched in her hand.
"Oh my God, what did you take?" Yunsu exclaimed.
"A Qi, what exactly did you give her? What did she take? San Zhua!" Yunsu shouted at the dazed San Zhua. "Call an ambulance, quick! An ambulance!"
“She took it herself,” A Qi said slowly and foolishly to the panicked Yunsu.
“Aunt, you can't die! You still have Xiaoxue; you can't leave her behind! San Zhua, hurry and get some milk!”
“There’s no milk; there’s none in the fridge!”
“Saltwater, saltwater will do!”
“Mom…” At that moment, Lin Xue suddenly appeared at the door and rushed to her mother, “What on earth happened?”
“Xiaoxue, I’m sorry. In a moment of anger, I transferred you to that school, not realizing it would ruin your life. Ah…”
“Mom, no, you didn’t ruin me. You’ve always protected me. Mom!”
Lin Mu fainted.
“A Qi? Where’s A Qi?”
A gust of wind swept through, and the door slammed shut.
The window in the master bedroom was opened, and A Qi sat on the windowsill with her back to Yunsu.
“Senior Sister, don’t be foolish. Lin Xue’s mom will be fine; that man deserved what he got. You won’t get into trouble.”
“You really are incredibly naive,” A Qi said with disdain.
“What?”
"The man was killed by that woman. I merely used my position as a waiter to secretly place the recorder there. As for Lin Xue's mother, I wanted her dead from the very beginning. If she doesn't die, what meaning do my actions have?"
"Why... why? If you wanted to punish her, couldn't you just hand the evidence over to the police? Why did it have to come to murder?"
"Are you kidding? You think a tape alone can convict someone? Witnesses are either dead or insane, and evidence? There's nothing!"
"Senior Sister!"
"Yunsu, I know you're a good person. Can you do me a favor? There's a wooden box under my bed; please take it to the police as my last words."
Suddenly, an ambulance with its siren blaring rushed in.
"If I fall now, I'll land right on that car. That woman won't be saved then."
"That car isn't here to pick you up!" San Zhua suddenly burst out from the door by the window and grabbed A Qi.
"Let go of me!"
"Well done. Looks like I need to call my cousin."
In the hospital corridor, Yunsu, San Zhua, Lin Xue, and their cousin He Weiran waited anxiously for news.
