Perhaps the sound had provoked the Shadow Wolves below, as they suddenly charged at the tree where Meng Xingchen was perched. Terrified, he clung to the trunk, crying out, "Ah, Sister Yao, help me!"
Lin Yao was annoyed by his cries and used vines to bind him to the tree. "What are you so afraid of? With a tree as sturdy as that, those dozen or so Shadow Wolves wouldn't be able to bring it down even if they tried all night."
"I know, but I'm scared of falling!" Meng Xingchen replied, feeling quite wronged.
The Shadow Wolves below attacked frantically for a while before quickly dispersing. Finally able to calm down, Meng Xingchen said, "Sister Yao, how about I pay you ten thousand to protect me tonight?"
"No need. I'm in a good mood; let's just form a temporary team tonight! A little money is tempting, but considering the mission, I have to refuse," Lin Yao replied reluctantly.
"Alright then, thank you, Sister Yao!" Meng Xingchen responded cheerfully.
In the next moment, Lin Yao heard the mechanical voice of the system announce: "Mission Three complete. Reward: Sign-in points."
Finally finishing the last mission of the day, Lin Yao happily wove a hammock for Meng Xingchen. "Get some good rest; we have a tough battle to fight tomorrow!"
The next morning, Lin Yao woke up to find Meng Xingchen sprawled out in an awkward position. "Daylight's here; it's time to get up."
Meng Xingchen rubbed his eyes and quickly sat up, looking around. "Where did those Shadow Wolves go?"
"They're still hiding!"
Lin Yao's voice lingered in his ears when she gracefully descended along the vines. At the moment she landed, a short blade plunged into the ground with a splash of blood as she pulled it out.
It was then that Meng Xingchen realized Lin Yao had swiftly taken down one of the Shadow Wolves. In an instant, she dashed sideways and struck again; another wolf fell. Then left and right she moved with lethal precision.
By the time she had killed four wolves in quick succession, the pack finally reacted. A howl echoed through the air as they surrounded Lin Yao.
"Sister Yao, I'm coming to help!" Meng Xingchen shouted in fear but still shakily climbed down from the tree. He drew his short blade and stood back-to-back with Lin Yao against the wolves.
Lin Yao raised an eyebrow but said nothing, maintaining her cold demeanor as she faced off against the pack.
After a tense standoff lasting about ten minutes, another howl pierced the air. Startled, Meng Xingchen thought the wolves were about to launch a full-scale attack. To his surprise, however, they began retreating backward.
In just a few minutes, the pack vanished into the forest.
Meng Xingchen plopped down on the ground, startled out of his wits! Lin Yao also ceased her attack, picking a few leaves off the ground to wipe the blood from her shorts. She asked, "If you're this scared, why are you even participating in the practical exam?"
"Isn't it because I want to get into the Mechanical Engineering department of the First Academy?" he replied.
"You can take the advanced exam later if you want to study mechanics," she said.
At sixteen, he had just emerged from the ivory tower of junior school and had no real experience dealing with danger. Since he wasn't in a combat major, he could have waited until after three training sessions at the intermediate academy to take the exam.
"But the number of admissions for the Mecha program at the First Military Academy is too low in the unified examination. I'm afraid I won't make it!" Meng Xingchen exclaimed.
The First Academy directly feeds into the First Military Academy, and among its most distinguished programs—aside from combat and command—was mecha manufacturing.
Lin Yao could only pat his shoulder sympathetically. "Then good luck!"
"Yao Jie, can I hire you? One hundred thousand star coins to protect me until the exam is over?" Meng Xingchen's eyes sparkled with hope.
In the dim light last night, she hadn't seen clearly, but today she realized this kid was actually quite cute, with a cherubic face. However, no matter how adorable he was, she couldn't let him derail her plans. "You can stick with me for now. If we encounter any insurmountable danger, I won't look after you anymore; I need to ensure my own success in the practical exam first."
"Deal!" Meng Xingchen agreed readily.
"We're already behind schedule; we need to march quickly. Do you have any issues with that?"
"No problem! Yao Jie, don't underestimate me just because I'm timid; my physical skills are close to breaking through level four."
"That's good to hear!"
The two hurried along and finally exited the Shadow Forest by noon, entering Frostwood Forest. The forest was named for its trees with white leaves, creating a dazzling sight that could blind anyone who looked too long.
Taking advantage of a break, Lin Yao listened to the system's announcements while casually asking Meng Xingchen, "Do you know what Frostwood Forest is famous for?"
"Famous for? You mean its unique plants and beasts?" Meng Xingchen interpreted her question correctly and began listing examples. "There are Moonlight Deer and Moonlight Grass that grows alongside them."
"Oh? What are Moonlight Deer and Moonlight Grass useful for?"
"Sis, you’re not thinking of hunting Moonlight Deer, are you? That would be a big no-no! Because their meat is so delicious, their numbers have already decreased significantly. Even Moonlight Grass has seen a decline because of it. Moonlight Grass is an important ingredient for stabilizing potions and is protected by the Pharmacists' Association. Hunting them intentionally could land you in jail!" Meng Xingchen said anxiously.
"I’m just asking!" Lin Yao replied quickly.
She had actually encountered several check-in points while hurrying on her journey yesterday. Those check-in points were all white, and whenever she came across one, she tentatively signed in at a few.
At the Cangyun Mountain check-in, she received a piece of Qinggang Stone; at the source of the Si River, she obtained a block of Source Spring Water; and at the Cedar Forest, she got a root of Cedar Branch.
After using up a check-in point, she only managed to sign in for some random items, which left her feeling a bit disheartened. Just now, she had heard the system announce several times, but she hadn’t dared to sign in again, fearing the waste of her hard-earned check-in points.
Now, upon hearing Meng Xingchen mention the Moonlight Deer, Moonlight Grass, and Jin Shangling, she couldn’t help but feel tempted. With so many exotic plants and creatures around, even signing in for just one of each would be worth it.
She closed her eyes and chose to sign in again, only to hear the system announce: "Check-in successful, you have obtained White Leaf (kilograms)."
Lin Yao took a deep breath and asked Meng Xingchen what White Leaf was.
"White Leaf?" Meng Xingchen picked up a white leaf from the ground. "Is this the White Leaf you’re talking about?"
Lin Yao glanced at the White Leaf in her system space and then at the one in front of her. She could only nod helplessly. "What’s its use?"
Although this White Leaf was also an exotic plant, she hadn’t discovered any practical uses for it yet.
Feeling pained over her wasted check-in point, Lin Yao suddenly stood up and said, "Alright, let’s hurry on."
Meng Xingchen stared blankly as Lin Yao dashed off into the distance. He could only follow helplessly while muttering to himself, "Did I say something wrong? Why does she seem a bit angry?"
