"It's fine, Grandma. As long as we didn't hit her, that's all that matters. Besides, you got hurt pretty badly," Qin Huairu said, trying to reassure her.
"Thank goodness, thank goodness! You scared me to death!" Jia Zhangshi replied, still feeling the tension. She was so anxious that she didn't dare step outside all day.
Wang Jiefang wandered around outside for a while before heading back. His grandmother's worried gaze was too much for him; she looked as if she feared he might trip and fall, which dampened his spirits for further exploration.
As he returned to the entrance of the courtyard, he bumped into Lou Xiao'e, who was pushing her bicycle out.
"Where have you been? Be careful on the road!" Lou Xiao'e said softly. Wang Jiefang could tell that her concern was genuine.
"It's Sister Xiao'e! I was just out for a stroll. I'm fine; I know this area well enough not to fall!" Wang Jiefang explained naturally, noticing a hint of pity in Lou Xiao'e's eyes. She really was as kind-hearted as the books described!
"Staying indoors all the time isn't good. It's nice to get some fresh air," Lou Xiao'e said. "Oh, wait a moment." After finishing her sentence, she parked her bicycle and hurried back into the courtyard.
About five minutes later, she returned, and Wang Jiefang was still standing there watching her bicycle. He was curious about why she had asked him to wait.
Lou Xiao'e handed him a box of pastries. "These are from Da Mao. I find them too sweet and can't get used to them. You can take them home and try them!"
Wang Jiefang couldn't accept the pastries. He didn't believe her claim about them being too sweet; if she didn't like them, Xu Da Mao wouldn't have spent money on them!
Seeing that Wang Jiefang was about to return the pastries, Lou Xiao'e pushed the box toward him again. "Sister-in-law gave these to you; just take them! I'm not missing out on this treat. Anyway, I need to hurry back to my family."
Watching Lou Xiao'e ride away with a wave, Wang Jiefang could only smile wryly as he took the pastries and headed home.
Across the street, San Da Ma observed the entire exchange clearly. She immediately recognized that the pastry box was from the famous Xu Ji pastry shop, known for its expensive treats that her family had never tasted before!
Seeing Lou Xiao'e give Wang Jiefang a box of such expensive pastries made her envious; her eyes turned red with jealousy. How could Lou Xiao'e be so wasteful? Giving such costly pastries to a blind man—was she interested in him?
No way! Such good pastries shouldn't go to waste on this blind man! With that thought in mind, she pushed open the door and stepped outside.
"Hey there, Little Wang! Out for a stroll? That's good; it saves you from getting bored indoors!" San Da Ma greeted him with a big smile.
Wang Jiefang quickly understood what San Da Ma was up to; she thought since he couldn't see, she could be all over those pastries!
He decided not to engage with her and turned his back to head into his house.
Seeing that Wang Jiefang ignored her and went straight inside made San Da Ma anxious. "Hey! Little Wang, look at these pastries—"
Before she could finish her sentence, Wang Jiefang shut the door behind him!
