Pei Yichen frequently interacted with Jiang Lian'er due to the assassin case. He often brought case files to the Jiang Residence, where he and Jiang Lian'er would discuss the details in a secluded corner of the garden. Jiang Lian'er would flip through the thick documents, her eyes quickly scanning the text and images. Using her modern investigative mindset, she began to analyze the case with remarkable speed.
As she examined the motive behind the attack, Jiang Lian'er lightly tapped her fingers on the file and said, "Mr. Pei, consider this: the assassin chose to strike during a royal banquet. While it appears that the target is the Emperor, it may actually be an attempt to create chaos. There could be a force behind this, aiming to exploit the situation for their own gain as the court descends into turmoil. Moreover, I've noticed that these assassins operate with a high degree of organization; they don't seem like a haphazard mob."
Pei Yichen listened intently, nodding slightly to encourage her to continue.
Jiang Lian'er continued, "Now, look at the weapons used by these assassins. They are forged from fine iron, with sharp blades that bear unique markings. This craftsmanship is not something an ordinary blacksmith could achieve; it likely comes from a specific family of weapon makers or a martial sect."
She picked up a pen and quickly sketched the marking on the blade before handing it to Pei Yichen.
Next, Jiang Lian'er began investigating the movements of suspicious individuals.
She meticulously studied the records of people present before and after the assassins appeared, suddenly her eyes lit up. "Mr. Pei, look at these mysterious figures who have connections with the Jiang family. They were frequently seen entering and leaving the capital just before the incident, and they acted discreetly, deliberately avoiding crowds. Particularly this person named Zhao Xuan; he had a lengthy private conversation with Father Jiang at one of our family’s banquets, shortly before we started noticing assassins gathering in secret around the capital."
Pei Yichen furrowed his brow as he pondered Jiang Lian'er's words. "Are you suggesting that the Jiang family might be connected to this assassination case?"
Jiang Lian'er shook her head. "We can't be certain yet, but this is definitely an important lead. We need to delve deeper into Zhao Xuan's background—where he comes from and what forces he may be associated with."
Throughout their discussion, Jiang Lian'er consistently offered unique insights.
For instance, based on the agility and attack patterns of the assassins, she deduced, "Given their nimble skills and distinctive fighting styles, they must have undergone rigorous training. I’ve come across similar martial arts descriptions in ancient texts; this style likely originates from a mysterious organization in the north that specializes in training assassins for various covert missions."
Pei Yichen grew increasingly impressed by her intelligence. Watching Jiang Lian'er focus intently on analyzing the case stirred something within him. As their eyes met during their exchange, a deepening trust blossomed between them.
Pei Yichen cast an admiring glance at Jiang Lian'er when she presented a brilliant insight, saying, "Miss Jiang, your perspective always enlightens me. Without you, this case might have been stuck in a deadlock for much longer."
Jiang Lian'er smiled gently, replying, "Mr. Pei, you flatter me. I merely expressed my thoughts; it is you who must verify their authenticity."
One day, in order to investigate a lead regarding the assassin's hiding place, they decided to venture together to an Abandoned Manor on the outskirts of the capital.
Despite the dangers, Jiang Lian'er insisted on accompanying him. Although Pei Yichen was concerned for her safety, he recognized her determination and reluctantly agreed to take her along.
Inside the Abandoned Manor, Jiang Lian'er carefully examined every corner, leaving no stone unturned.
Suddenly, she spotted some fresh footprints on the ground. Following the trail, they discovered a hidden chamber in the basement.
The chamber was covered in dust, yet traces indicated that someone had been there not long ago.
In the chamber, Jiang Lian'er found a token marked with the same insignia as the assassin's weapon. Excitedly holding it up to Pei Yichen, she exclaimed, "Mr. Pei, look! This is evidence that proves our deduction is correct; the assassin is indeed connected to a certain organization."
Pei Yichen took the token and examined it closely, a look of satisfaction spreading across his face. "Miss Jiang, we owe this discovery entirely to you."
In that moment, their understanding and feelings for each other deepened further as they stood side by side in the chamber, seemingly already envisioning the moment when the truth of the case would be revealed.
