The Jiang Residence was not at peace either; the servants began to disappear frequently, and each time, there were no signs of anything unusual beforehand. First, a young servant responsible for cleaning did not return one night. He was usually diligent and honest, never holding grudges against anyone. Just the day before, he had been happily sweeping the courtyard, chatting and laughing with other servants, but by the next day, he had vanished without a trace. Everyone assumed he had left due to some family matter and paid it no mind. Then, a maid from the kitchen also disappeared without explanation. This maid was timid and avoided trouble, quietly going about her work in the kitchen, and there had been no reports of her behaving inappropriately or offending anyone.
Jiang Lian'er found this matter very suspicious. She asked other servants about it, but they all shook their heads in ignorance. One day, as she passed by an abandoned woodshed, she heard faint sounds of struggle and cries for help coming from inside. Her heart tightened in fear as she cautiously approached the shed, taking careful steps to avoid alarming anyone inside.
Peering through a crack in the door, she saw several men in black binding an old woman. The old woman looked terrified, her eyes wide open as she repeatedly shouted, "I don't know! I didn't see anything!" The men in black threatened her in low voices, "If you don’t speak up, you’ll regret it!" Jiang Lian'er was startled and wanted to rush in to save her, but she feared she would not be able to handle the men in black. If she startled them, not only would she fail to rescue the old woman, but she might also put herself in danger.
As she hesitated, it seemed the men sensed something; the leader suddenly turned his head sharply and fixed a piercing gaze on the door. Jiang Lian'er quickly hid aside, holding her breath. When she cautiously peeked out again, the men in black had already taken the old woman and left through the back door.
Back in her room, Jiang Lian'er was filled with confusion and unease. Sitting on the edge of her bed with her hands tightly clasped together, her mind raced with thoughts about the identities and motives of those men in black. Why were they capturing people within the Jiang Residence? Was it related to the letter she had discovered? Or did it have some connection to Pei Yichen's attack?
Jiang Lian'er felt as if she had fallen into a vast mystery fraught with danger. She knew she could not sit idly by; she had to take action. Thus, she began to secretly observe every corner of the residence and monitor everyone's movements.
She noticed that since the servants had gone missing, some guards' patrol routes and timings seemed to have changed, and Wang's confidants appeared somewhat anxious. This further convinced Jiang Lian'er that there was a significant conspiracy behind these events.
Determined to investigate those guards whose patrols had changed, Jiang Lian'er intentionally created small accidents during their rounds—like dropping items along their path—to observe their reactions. At the same time, she tried to extract information from Wang's confidants by casually revealing some inconsequential clues she'd discovered while pretending to be flustered, hoping to see how they would respond.
Throughout this process, although Jiang Lian'er was filled with fear and anxiety, she maintained her composure and rationality. She understood that it was her responsibility to unravel the mystery and protect herself and those around her; there could be no retreat. She continually encouraged herself, believing that as long as she persisted, she would surely uncover the truth and dispel the clouds of suspicion hanging over the Jiang Residence.
