This is a case known as one of the “Top Ten Bizarre Cases in Shijiazhuang,” a major criminal incident.
What makes this case so strange is that the kidnapper, despite clearly intending to extort ransom, mysteriously vanished without collecting any money, while the victim was dismembered and cooked in stainless steel barrels.
Terrifyingly, the killer not only boiled the remains into soup but also used a meat grinder to turn some of the body parts into minced meat, which was then made into various specialty pancakes.
Date of the incident: February 26, 2005.
Location: Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province.

That afternoon, a middle-aged couple rushed into the police station to report that their daughter had been kidnapped.
Two hours earlier, they had received a phone call from their daughter's mobile number, but to their shock, the voice on the other end belonged to a rough-sounding man. The man claimed that their daughter had been kidnapped and demanded a ransom of 300,000 yuan for her safe return.
Although the couple was deeply worried about their daughter's safety, 300,000 yuan was an astronomical sum for their family. After much deliberation, they ultimately decided to seek help from the police.
Upon learning of the situation, the police instructed the couple to contact the kidnapper and falsely claim they were preparing to pay the ransom in order to ensure their daughter's safety. However, everyone was taken aback when, upon calling their daughter's phone again, they found it turned off, and the kidnapper never contacted them again.
Typically, kidnappers aim for ransom and will continue to pressure the victim's family for money until they receive it.
But why did the kidnapper vanish after just one extortion call? Did he know that the couple had reported to the police? If so, this could be very serious; the victim might be in grave danger. In response, the police quickly launched an investigation into the couple's daughter.
The kidnapped girl was named Pan Li, a 26-year-old university student. Strangely enough, her family was not wealthy; both parents were ordinary workers, making it unlikely that she would be targeted for kidnapping.
After investigation, the police confirmed that Pan Li's social connections were quite simple; she had no economic disputes or emotional entanglements with anyone, and certainly no grudges against anyone. They simply could not understand why the kidnappers targeted her.
Unfortunately, the surveillance system at that time was inadequate. The police ultimately only knew that Pan Li had entered the area around Qingyuan Street, which was not only a bustling commercial district with a mixed crowd but also had numerous roads leading in all directions, making it impossible to determine whether she had left. In desperation, the police had to conduct door-to-door inquiries in the vicinity of Qingyuan Street.
However, just as the officers were searching for clues from house to house, on March 11, 2005, the public security bureau received another report of a kidnapping.
The victim was identified as Liu Linlin, a 24-year-old female university student. Strangely enough, Liu Linlin came from a poor background and had been working part-time as a tutor to alleviate her family's financial burden. She also seemed an unlikely target for kidnapping.
Although the ransom demanded this time was only 20,000 yuan, after making a threatening phone call, the kidnappers mysteriously went offline. This meant that this kidnapping case mirrored that of Pan Li's.
What was even more surprising was that after nearly a week of investigation, the police discovered that Liu Linlin's last known location was also near Qingyuan Street. This suggested that the kidnappers' activity area was likely in this vicinity and could possibly involve local residents or those renting nearby.
Consequently, the police immediately merged the two cases for investigation, focusing on areas where both female students had crossed paths.
In their earlier investigation of Pan Li's case, the police found that she frequently visited a Jianbing Shop on Qingyuan Street before her abduction. Coincidentally, Liu Linlin also shared a fondness for this same Jianbing Shop.
As the investigation deepened, officers determined that this Jianbing Shop was indeed the only place where both women had intersected. To avoid alerting the suspect, the police promptly initiated a covert investigation into the Jianbing Shop and unexpectedly discovered that its owner, Gu Baocheng, was actually a wanted criminal.
It turned out that back in 2003, Gu Baocheng had participated in an armed robbery at a gas station. Although his accomplices were quickly apprehended after the incident, he managed to escape.
In 2004, he was involved in another extortion case. Although this case was resolved by the police in time without serious consequences, he once again evaded capture.
In addition to Gu Baocheng's chilling criminal history, recent strange occurrences at the Jianbing Shop also caught the police's attention. It appeared that Gu Baocheng's shop was known for its variety of delicious Jianbing pancakes, attracting many passersby and generating significant business.
However, over the past month and a half, numerous customers reported symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea after eating Gu Baocheng's pancakes; some even found foreign objects like nails and hair in their food. Furthermore, Gu Baocheng's wife, Shi Li Cha, and his female employee, Kang Yunsu, were also behaving unusually.
According to reports from neighbors, Gu Baocheng and Shi Li Cha, although they appeared to be a couple, actually had a troubled relationship marked by frequent domestic violence. Despite the beatings from Gu Baocheng, Shi Li Cha remained silent, seemingly terrified of him and enduring the abuse in silence.
Meanwhile, female employee Kang Yunsu seemed to be under Gu Baocheng's control, never daring to defy his wishes, behaving like a marionette at his mercy. The police speculated that if the two kidnapping cases were indeed orchestrated by Gu Baocheng, then Shi Li Cha and Kang Yunsu were likely playing the role of accomplices under his threat and control.
To verify this speculation, the police monitored Gu Baocheng to prevent his escape while secretly summoning Shi Li Cha for questioning.
During the interrogation, Shi Li Cha appeared nervous and hesitant, but under the patient guidance of the officers, she eventually broke down in tears and revealed a shocking secret. It turned out that Pan Li and Liu Linlin had indeed been kidnapped by Gu Baocheng, and both Shi Li Cha and Kang Yunsu were involved throughout the ordeal.
Incredibly, Shi Li Cha claimed that the two female university students had been murdered, with their bodies dismembered and cooked in stainless steel barrels. Some body parts were turned into soup or minced meat, while the rest were discarded at a garbage dump.
Although Shi Li Cha disclosed this horrifying account of the crime, the police needed more concrete evidence to corroborate her statements since the body parts could not be found.
Consequently, officers swiftly arrested Gu Baocheng and Kang Yunsu and arranged for technicians to investigate both the Jianbing Shop and their residence. They also conducted an examination related to Liu Linlin.
Three days later, Gu Baocheng and Kang Yunsu killed Liu Linlin, dismembered her body, transported it in foam boxes to the Jianbing Shop for cooking, and buried her head, bones, hands, and feet in an empty lot in a village near Jinzhou City.
With Gu Baocheng's identification, the police located part of Liu Linlin's buried remains. Thus, the truth of the case was revealed. In September 2005, the Shijiazhuang Intermediate People's Court sentenced Gu Baocheng to death with lifelong deprivation of political rights. Kang Yunsu received a life sentence while Shi Li Cha was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
In January 2006, Gu Baocheng was taken to the execution ground where he was identified before being executed. It is hoped that everyone can learn from this cautionary tale: never flaunt wealth or boast excessively to avoid unnecessary trouble and danger. Additionally, when working part-time outside, it is crucial to enhance self-protection awareness and seek help from authorities at the first sign of trouble.
