He is the prototype of An Xin from the television series "Kuang Biao," a police officer who fights solely for justice and the pursuit of truth as a People's Police. In 2005, he took it upon himself to overturn the conviction of a criminal who had been executed ten years prior, standing against the entire provincial "umbrella" of protection. 0

Little did he expect that his relentless quest for justice would lead to a dramatic shift in his own life. Not only did he lose his position as Deputy Director of the Public Security Bureau, but his family also faced a series of misfortunes. 0

His wife was forced to resign from her job, his child, despite ranking first in the civil service exam, was disqualified, their salary and home were seized, and ultimately, he fell ill with nine different diseases due to overwork. 0

Yet, despite all these adversities and retaliations, none could extinguish the flame of his unwavering belief that righteousness would prevail. 0

"I am a People's Police; I am responsible to the people! It is worth it!" 0

Date of Incident: January 18, 2005. 0

Location: Guangping County, Hebei Province. 0

On this day, Zheng Chengyue, Deputy Director of the Guangping County Public Security Bureau, received an unexpected call from the police in Xingyang, Henan Province. They had apprehended a man who was none other than Wang Shujin, a fugitive wanted by the Guangping County police. 0

Upon hearing the news, Zheng Chengyue drove overnight to Henan. Wang Shujin had committed multiple crimes and had killed two people; he was a notorious murderer. 0

Zheng Chengyue had been pursuing him for ten years since he became an officer. 0

During Zheng Chengyue's personal interrogation, Wang Shujin not only confessed to several rape cases committed in Guangping County but also revealed details about a rape and murder case from 1994 in a cornfield in the western suburbs of Shijiazhuang, Henan. 0

On January 23, Zheng Chengyue brought Wang Shujin to the scene in the western suburbs of Shijiazhuang for identification. Just as Wang Shujin pointed out a location claiming it was the crime scene, the village security chief suddenly interjected, "No, that's not right. The murderer from that case was executed ten years ago." 0

In 1994, there had been a rape and murder case where 19-year-old Nie Shubin was identified as the culprit and executed in 1995. 0

To understand the circumstances of that time and verify Wang Shujin's confession, Zheng Chengyue applied to review the case files from that year. However, what should have been a routine request seemed obstructed by invisible forces; no matter how he negotiated, he could not obtain Nie Shubin's files. 0

He realized that if he couldn't succeed in his application even with his position as Deputy Director, this matter was certainly complex. This meant that Wang Shujin's confession might indeed be true—could it indicate that Nie Shubin's case was a miscarriage of justice? 0

Faced with various obstacles in his investigation, Zheng Chengyue decided to meet Nie Shubin's parents first. 0

He discovered that ever since Nie Shubin's execution, his parents had been tirelessly seeking justice for their son. His mother had even purchased numerous books on law with the clear intention of fighting for her son's vindication. 0

Zheng Chengyue was filled with emotion as he assured Nie Shubin's parents that he would get to the bottom of the case. 0

At that moment, a journalist from Henan, who had been following the Wang Shujin case, approached Zheng Chengyue with an introduction letter from the municipal bureau's political department. Zheng then exposed the case to the media. 0

On March 15, 2005, an article titled "One Case, Two Killers: Who is the Real Culprit?" was published, causing an uproar in public opinion. The Nie Shubin case once again made headlines across the nation after ten years. 0

On March 20, influenced by public sentiment, Zheng Chengyue received a notification from the Hebei Provincial Political and Legal Affairs Committee, instructing him to report on the case. He was accompanied by police officers who had investigated the Nie Shubin case and personnel from the court. 0

This time, Zheng finally got to see the case files. He immediately noticed numerous errors and inconsistencies within them, which reinforced his belief that the Nie Shubin case was a miscarriage of justice. 0

Subsequently, the Hebei Provincial Political and Legal Affairs Committee decided to establish two special task forces: one to collaborate with relevant departments in Shijiazhuang to review the Nie Shubin case, and another to work with the Guangping County Public Security Bureau to investigate the Wang Shujin case. 0

However, what Zheng Chengyue did not expect was that just as the case was turning around, leaders from the political and legal committee were suddenly reassigned. The review of the Nie Shubin case fell through, and he was repeatedly summoned by superiors who urged him not to meddle in matters that did not concern him. 0

Rumors began to circulate that Zheng was obstructing justice and attempting to leverage his authority against others. 0

In 2015, Zheng Chengyue's mother-in-law fell seriously ill. Over the past ten years, he had been tirelessly working on the Nie Shubin case and had no savings. In desperation, his wife had to take out a loan of 300,000 yuan from a company to pay for her mother's medical treatment. 0

Due to failure to repay on time, the company sued them, resulting in Zheng's salary being frozen. His wife was forced to resign from her job, and even their home was seized. 0

Fortunately, fate took a turn. 0

In 2016, "Political King Zhang," who controlled the entire judicial system in Hebei, was brought down. It turned out that a high-ranking official closely associated with Zhang had overseen the Nie Shubin case. To protect his interests, Zhang had continuously obstructed Zheng Chengyue's efforts for justice. 0

With the puppet master removed, on June 8, 2016, the Supreme Court decided to retry the Nie Shubin case. Without any interference this time, justice finally prevailed. 0

On December 2, 2016, the Supreme Court acquitted Nie Shubin. His parents received state compensation of 2.68 million yuan. Upon learning that their son had finally been vindicated, tears streamed down their faces; they felt their lives were no longer in vain. 0

Sadly, after eleven years of fighting for this cause, Zheng Chengyue fell ill. 0

In his quest for justice for Nie Shubin, he had overworked himself and developed nine different ailments. To save money on treatment, he had been relying on relatively inexpensive traditional Chinese medicine, which caused his condition to worsen repeatedly. 0

After Nie Shubin's exoneration, it seemed as though Zheng Chengyue had lost his will to live. 0

In 2018, his condition worsened, and he had no money for treatment. News spread, and many netizens were moved to tears, calling for help for Zheng Chengyue. 0

Within just one day, hundreds of thousands of donations flowed into Zheng Chengyue's account. In the hearts of many, he had already become a symbol of justice and heroism. Helping him felt like a way to rectify the delayed sense of justice. 0

So why did Zheng Chengyue insist on seeking justice for Nie Shubin, a stranger? The answer lies in his family background; his father was also a victim of a wrongful conviction. 0

During the early years of the Cultural Revolution, his father was falsely accused and imprisoned, leaving six-year-old Zheng Chengyue to wander the streets, surviving on scraps. It wasn't until 1978 that his father was exonerated, allowing 18-year-old Zheng Chengyue the opportunity to enlist in the military. 0

After returning from service, he was assigned as the head of security at a local bank, where he worked for ten years. In 1993, Zheng Chengyue self-studied and passed the entrance exam for the Law Department at China University of Political Science and Law. After graduation, he fulfilled his dream by joining the Guangping County Public Security Bureau as a criminal police officer. 0

Once in uniform, Zheng Chengyue always remembered his father's teachings: as a People's Police officer, one must be pragmatic and honest at all times, never harming others. Therefore, when he encountered the Nie Shubin case, he was determined to seek justice for him. 0

He sought no wealth; only justice, only the truth, only to honor his badge. 0

On February 2, 2021, Wang Shujin was finally executed. Although for various reasons the Supreme Court did not recognize Wang Shujin's claim of being the true culprit in the Nie Shubin case, it is undeniable that without his involvement, Nie Shubin's case would not have been rectified. 0

In 2022, Zheng Chengyue's condition deteriorated again. Before passing away, he told Nie Shubin's sister, "After I die, please erect a monument beside Nie Shubin's grave that reads 'People's Police Love the People.'" 0

On May 6 of the same year, Zheng Chengyue passed away at the age of 62. 0

Here we pay tribute to this heroic police officer and wish him peace on his journey ahead! 0
