The young man swung his knife indiscriminately, striking left and right, each blow aimed at the back of the head, as if he were chopping vegetables. This brutal attack resulted in the deaths of nine people and left nineteen others injured to varying degrees.
What was shocking was that the perpetrator was a youthful-looking man who had no prior acquaintance with any of the victims—there were no grudges or animosities involved.
Even more astonishing was the fact that this young man committed such a heinous act merely to vent his frustrations.
As the saying goes, those with heavy resentment often feel that fate is unfair to them. They possess a terrifying logic: since I am suffering, you should not expect to fare any better.
What kind of experiences could lead a man to suddenly raise a knife against a group of defenseless students?
The incident occurred on April 27, 2018.
Location: Mizhi County, Yulin City, Shaanxi Province.

That afternoon, as the pleasant sound of the school bell rang, students from Mizhi County No. 3 Middle School streamed out of the gates. However, no one noticed a young man in tattered jeans blending into the crowd.
Suddenly, for reasons unknown, the young man charged directly toward the school entrance. The security guard assumed he was just an anxious parent and paid him no mind.
Unexpectedly, as the young man approached the clusters of students, he suddenly drew a dagger from his body and began to attack without hesitation. With one arm grabbing a student and the other wielding the knife, he struck left and right with lethal precision. Instantly, screams and cries of terror filled the air, and chaos erupted at the school gate.
By the time the security guards managed to subdue him, dozens of students lay on the ground.
Following an investigation by the police, it was confirmed that the assailant was named Zhao Zewei, 28 years old. In this indiscriminate attack, he caused nine deaths and injured nineteen others to varying extents. What baffled many was that these victims had no prior connection to him—there were no grudges or enmities.
What drove Zhao Zewei to commit such an atrocity? Born in 1990 into an ordinary family in Yulin City, Mizhi County, Zhao Zewei enjoyed a happy childhood with loving parents and doting grandparents. His days were filled with joy and contentment.
However, this bliss came to an abrupt halt when he entered elementary school. Due to his frail physique compared to his peers and his introverted nature, he naturally became a target for bullying.
Yet they were just elementary school children; even though bullying occurred, it wasn't excessively cruel. Thus, Zhao Zewei chose to silently endure it, thinking that once he reached middle school, everything would improve.
Time flew by quickly, and Zhao Zewei soon found himself in Mizhi County No. 3 Middle School alongside those who had bullied him. Here, he extended goodwill toward his former tormentors, sincerely hoping to become friends with them. However, instead of earning their friendship, his actions only reinforced their belief that he was weak and easy to bully.
As a result, Zhao Zewei's experience of bullying in junior high school was even more tragic than in elementary school. Although he had once fought back, he quickly realized that his fists were no match for the many hands against him, and his resistance often led to harsher retaliation. He had reported the bullying to the school, but aside from a reprimand, they did nothing to address the students who tormented him.
What left Zhao Zewei feeling even more hopeless was that his parents believed fighting among junior high students was perfectly normal, so they did not take his pleas for help seriously. Left with no other choice, he chose to endure the bullying in silence, just as he had in elementary school.
Over time, Zhao Zewei became increasingly withdrawn and timid due to the prolonged campus violence he faced. His academic performance plummeted, resulting in scores that were insufficient for high school admission, forcing him to enroll in a vocational school instead.
Although he faced no further bullying during his three years at vocational school, the traumatic experiences of junior high had left a deep impact on him. He was too afraid to socialize with others and lived in a world of his own.
As time passed, Zhao Zewei's symptoms of social withdrawal worsened. One day, he finally mustered the courage to tell his parents that he no longer wanted to attend school. His parents understood that their son had lost interest in studying; although they felt regretful, they could do nothing but agree to let him drop out and stay home.
In reality, if his parents had recognized their son's psychological struggles at that moment, perhaps the subsequent tragedies could have been avoided. Unfortunately, they were ordinary workers without any knowledge of such issues.
After dropping out of vocational school, Zhao Zewei began spending every day at internet cafes, refusing to return home unless his parents came looking for him.
His father realized that this situation couldn't continue; not only was it a waste of money, but if Zhao Zewei got involved with troublemakers at the internet cafe, the consequences could be dire. So he decided to buy Zhao Zewei a computer for home use.
However, once there was a computer at home, Zhao Zewei never left the house again. Sometimes he wouldn't even come out of his room when called for meals. In frustration, his father attempted to cut off the internet connection, but Zhao Zewei retaliated by refusing to eat.
After several days of this standoff, it was his father who ultimately couldn't hold out any longer. Seeing his son go without food and water for days on end frightened him enough that he reluctantly restored the internet connection.
Zhao Zewei became completely immersed in computer games and ignored the outside world. Despite his parents' frequent attempts to persuade him to go out for a walk or enjoy some fresh air—even if it was just for leisure—he remained stubbornly isolated.
Four years later, one day he suddenly walked out of the house and announced that he wanted to find a job. This marked an end to his self-imposed isolation.
Soon after, Zhao Zewei found work as a waiter. Although the pay was modest, it was nonetheless a positive step forward. His parents felt relieved and believed their son had finally matured.
However, this situation lasted less than a year before Zhao Zewei quit due to an inability to cope with daily interactions with customers and retreated back into being a recluse. Despite his family's best efforts to encourage him otherwise, he refused to step outside again.
In 2017, when his father suffered a traffic accident and could not work for a while, Zhao Zewei still refused to help share the burden with his mother. Even then, his parents held no resentment towards him. It wasn't until one failed matchmaking experience that their dissatisfaction truly surfaced.
Zhao Zewei's father thought it was about time for his son to settle down and take on some responsibility. He decided it was time to find him a wife.
Knowing that people around them viewed Zhao Zewei as a problematic young man—no one would want to marry their daughter into such a situation—he told the matchmaker that they could offer a higher bride price and promised to buy them an apartment in town after marriage.
With such generous conditions, the Matchmaker quickly found a girl willing to go on a blind date with Zhao Zewei. However, on the day of the meeting, Zhao Zewei stubbornly refused to leave his bedroom to meet her, leaving both sets of parents and the Matchmaker in an awkward situation.
From that day on, no Matchmaker was willing to wade into such murky waters again. Moreover, Zhao Zewei's parents frequently found themselves in heated arguments with their son over this incident.
In reality, Zhao Zewei was simply introverted and afraid of social interaction, but that did not mean he was foolish. He understood very well that his parents' behavior stemmed from his own psychological issues.
However, instead of seeking change, Zhao Zewei believed that his current state was a result of the bullying he had endured from his classmates, which filled him with hatred towards them. As time passed, his resentment deepened until one day he decided to take revenge on those classmates.
Starting in April 2018, Zhao Zewei began to behave unusually, roaming around Mizhi County. However, his purpose was not to find a job but to gather information about the classmates who had bullied him in the past. Unfortunately, time had passed; those who had once tormented him were either long gone or untraceable.
On April 27th, after yet another fruitless search, Zhao Zewei found himself outside the gates of Mizhi County No. 3 Middle School. Suddenly, a familiar school bell rang out, catching his attention.
Looking at his former school and the vibrant students in their uniforms, Zhao Zewei felt a profound sense of injustice from fate. A sinister thought suddenly crossed his mind: since he could not find his former classmates, he would make the school bear the brunt of his hatred.
Without hesitation, Zhao Zewei charged into the crowd while drawing out a dagger he intended to use for his revenge. He struck indiscriminately at anyone in sight. In that moment, covered in blood and with a twisted expression on his face, he continued to harbor murderous intent until he was subdued by the crowd.
On July 10, 2018, the Shanxi Yulin Intermediate People's Court sentenced Zhao Zewei to death for Intentional Homicide and deprived him of political rights for life. On September 27, 2018, at 9 AM, Zhao Zewei was executed by gunfire.
Some say that the root of Zhao Zewei's crime lies in Campus Violence; however, experiencing Campus Violence cannot serve as an excuse for anyone's criminal actions, especially when it involves venting anger and hatred on innocent individuals.
It is hoped that everyone understands that responding to violence with violence is never the best choice; the law's boundaries must not be crossed by anyone.
