However, she could not keep deceiving everyone forever, which is why she agreed to the matchmaking that Hao Chunying suggested. It was not an option to refuse; after all, she was almost thirty in her previous life. Meanwhile, Yuan was only eighteen years old and had been spoiled at home, leading to her somewhat naive and carefree personality.
Anyone who had interacted with both the twenty-eight-year-old Ye Fangfei and the eighteen-year-old Yuan could easily notice the differences between them. The past three days had been a result of Yuan's illness, and with Ye Jianguo and Hao Chunying busy with work, Ye Fangfei had managed to keep up the charade.
Yet this was only a temporary solution; how could two completely different individuals avoid being discovered? To avoid unnecessary trouble, Ye Fangfei needed to distance herself from Yuan's familiar relatives as soon as possible. Marrying would be a good option for leaving.
Today was the day of the arranged meeting, and it was her mother, Hao Chunying, calling for her from outside. Since there was no turning back now, she decided to make the best of it; from now on, she would be the Ye Fangfei of the 1960s.
"Little Ye Fangfei, no matter what brought me here, I will live well for you. I will also honor your parents on your behalf," Ye Fangfei silently vowed in her heart.
She wasn't sure if it was psychological or something else, but after making that vow, she felt a sudden lightness in her heart. It was as if a heavy stone had been lifted from within her.
Ye Fangfei realized that perhaps Yuan's subconscious had finally let go. She took a deep breath and called out loudly, "Mom, I'm getting up now!"
With that, she hurriedly got out of bed and folded her blanket before heading out to wash up.
The Ye family lived in a large courtyard house divided into two rooms by a wall: a larger room for Ye Jianguo and Hao Chunying and a smaller one that had originally been shared by Yuan and her brother. After Ye Zijun got married, it became Yuan's private space.
In addition to these two rooms, Ye Jianguo had built a tall shed outside their window to serve as a kitchen. In summer, they washed up in the courtyard; in winter, they did so in the kitchen. Now, Ye Fangfei stood at the faucet in the courtyard brushing her teeth.
In the courtyard, besides Ye Fangfei, there were two other women who didn’t have to go to work, washing clothes by the faucet. One was Liu Fang, the daughter-in-law of the Zhao family living in the west wing, and the other was Wang Dazui, who resided in the west room of the main house. Ye Fangfei didn’t know her name; she only heard everyone call her Dazui. She didn’t seem to mind and chatted cheerfully with others.
This courtyard was just a small one-entry yard, home to four households in total. Compared to the family quarters of the machinery factory, all the men in this courtyard worked at the factory. Besides the Ye family, there was also the Zhao family living in the west wing. The head of their household was Zhao Dachui, who was in his teens. He and his wife had two sons and two daughters, with both daughters already married off. The woman washing clothes in the yard was his second daughter-in-law.
The three rooms of the main house housed two families; on the west side was Wang Dazui's family. Her husband was named Liang Cunman, and they had three children: one son and two daughters. On the east side lived an elderly couple; the man’s surname was Zhang, and he was called Zhang Shiwei, while his wife’s surname was Sun—Ye Fangfei didn’t know her full name but heard everyone refer to her as Granny Sun.
This elderly couple had one son and three daughters. Their son served in the military and reportedly had already married while stationed there. Their three daughters had also long since settled down. Now, it was just the elderly couple living here.
