The lunch was sumptuous, featuring braised pork, stir-fried zucchini with meat, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, spicy and sour shredded potatoes, cucumber salad, and fried cornmeal cakes. The staple was a type of steamed bun made from a mix of cornmeal and white flour.
During the meal, Ye Jianguo wanted to share a couple of drinks with Tang Zhicheng, but Tang Zhicheng politely declined, claiming he didn't drink. Nevertheless, Ye Jianguo happily poured himself two glasses of the Fenjiu that Tang Zhicheng had brought.
Hao Chunying and Ye Jianguo both complained about Tang Zhicheng's extravagant spending, but their smiles betrayed their true feelings. Especially Hao Chunying, who gazed at Tang Zhicheng with increasing fondness, embodying the old saying about a mother-in-law's affection for her son-in-law.
"Xiao Tang, try this braised pork and this stir-fried meat. The zucchini is homegrown by your aunt. Have more!" Hao Chunying enthusiastically served him food.
"Auntie, you don't need to be so polite; I can help myself," Tang Zhicheng quickly replied.
Ye Fangfei watched her mother serve Tang Zhicheng with such eagerness and felt a twinge of jealousy. "Mom, let him serve himself; you should eat too," she couldn't help but say.
Hao Chunying was taken aback for a moment as she noticed the jealousy on her daughter's face and couldn't help but chuckle. "You silly child! You're jealous because I'm serving Xiao Tang? Here, let me serve you some too."
As she spoke, she placed a piece of braised pork on Ye Fangfei's plate.
If Hao Chunying hadn't mentioned it, Ye Fangfei wouldn't have felt embarrassed; now that she had, her face turned crimson. Aunt Hao and the others burst into laughter.
"Fangfei is still just a child! It's not easy watching your mother be nice to someone else, is it?" Aunt Hao teased with a smile.
"Auntie!" Ye Fangfei called out in a rare display of affection.
As soon as she spoke, everyone laughed even harder. Ye Fangfei's face turned even redder, and she nearly put down her chopsticks to retreat to her room.
Eventually, after everyone had laughed enough—fearing that Ye Fangfei might genuinely get upset—Aunt Hao finally said, "Alright, alright, we won't laugh anymore."
However, no one noticed that while they were laughing, Tang Zhicheng had quietly slipped two pieces of braised pork onto Ye Fangfei's plate when no one was looking.
As she ate the braised pork that Tang Zhicheng had secretly served her, Ye Fangfei decided not to dwell on their teasing any longer.
After sharing some laughter, they shifted their focus back to serious matters.
"Xiao Tang, don't you think you should discuss your marriage with your parents?" Aunt Hao asked.
"No need, I can handle my own affairs," Tang Zhicheng replied seriously, putting down his chopsticks as he sensed the conversation was turning serious.
Aunt Hao nodded and continued, "You know your team is about to allocate housing."
"I was just thinking, it's been five years since the last allocation, right? If I miss this one, who knows when the next opportunity will come?"
Tang Zhicheng was well aware of this situation. His willingness to agree to the blind date was partly due to this concern. Clearly, Aunt Hao and the others were aware of it too.
After a moment of thought, Tang Zhicheng said, "This is how I see it: if Uncle and Aunt don't oppose, I’d like to register my marriage with Feifei first. No matter what, we should secure our spot for housing allocation."
"As for when to hold the wedding, I'll defer to Feifei and her parents on that."
"And regarding the bride price or any other requirements from her parents, I promise to meet whatever is reasonable."
Aunt Hao brought up the housing issue for this very reason. After all, it wasn't easy to wait for another allocation from the unit.
