Ye Fangfei was most satisfied with the fact that the house had a small backyard, or rather, a two-meter space behind the house. In this little area, the previous owner had built a toilet and a shower room in the northeast corner. Next to the shower room was a small coal shed, only as tall as a person.
The house was good, but it had one drawback: there was no kitchen. Ye Jianguo inspected the house inside and out and remarked on this. Ye Fangfei nodded in agreement; the house only had two rooms—one for living and one converted into a kitchen.
If it were just the two of them living there, it might be manageable. However, they would eventually have children, and while young ones could sleep with them, what would happen when they grew up? Nowadays, many families faced housing shortages, with numerous households sharing rooms. At worst, they could hang a curtain to provide some privacy, but Ye Fangfei, having come from modern times, felt that such arrangements were still inconvenient.
Ye Jianguo was not alone in his thoughts; Tang Zhicheng had also considered this. He was measuring the small yard outside. After taking measurements all around, he turned to Ye Fangfei and said, "Feifei, how about we build a small kitchen here? It doesn’t need to be too big—about two square meters from the yard wall will do. It doesn’t have to be very tall; we can make it slightly lower than the main house so it won’t block any light."
Ye Fangfei's eyes lit up at Tang Zhicheng's suggestion—it was indeed a great idea. With a kitchen in place, she could properly plan the layout of the two main rooms.
"Yes, that arrangement sounds perfect! With the kitchen set up, I can really think about how to organize those two main rooms," she replied enthusiastically. "Look, while this room isn’t wide, it is quite deep. I’m thinking of building a wall in the eastern room to create a bedroom inside for guests while using the outer space as a living room."
"The western room can be separated too; however, since it’s larger on the outside and smaller inside, we can use the outer room for living and turn the smaller inner room into a storage space. What do you think?" Ye Fangfei explained her plans with bright eyes.
"Sounds good; I’ll follow your lead. If you have any other ideas, let’s discuss them now while we haven’t moved in yet so we can arrange everything according to your vision," Tang Zhicheng said affectionately.
"We also need to redo the toilet; we should dig out the outside pit again and then finish it with cement."
The bathroom was also renovated with cement, making it convenient for flushing, Ye Fangfei remarked.
"I'll find someone tomorrow. Do you want a bed or a heated brick bed at home?" Tang Zhicheng asked again.
That was a question. Deep down, Ye Fangfei was used to sleeping in a bed. But that was in modern times when there was heating in the winter. A bed wasn't cold then.
However, it was different here. In winter, without a heated brick bed, she would surely freeze.
"Let's go with the heated brick bed; otherwise, I won't be able to sleep in the cold winter," Ye Fangfei said.
"And also..."
The two of them were discussing how to renovate and arrange their home without a care for anyone else around them. Meanwhile, over there, Ye Jianguo and Hao Chunying were also discussing furniture for their daughter.
"Jianguo, I was thinking we should get some furniture for our daughter," Hao Chunying said, looking at the empty house. "That young man Tang has written the title of such a nice house in our daughter's name; we can't be stingy, can we?"
In the past, Hao Chunying had been very satisfied with Tang Zhicheng, believing he was worthy of her daughter. Ever since she learned that he had put the house he bought in their daughter's name, Tang Zhicheng had risen in her esteem.
She thought of him as the best son-in-law in the world.
