After all, it was a house, and for ordinary folks, nothing was more important than having a home. Hao Chunying felt that since her son-in-law had already done so much, their family also needed to show some sincerity. Just like this time when they were renovating the house, she decided that they should contribute some money and also lend a hand. During their breaks, they would come over to help. After all, this was their daughter’s house, and it was only right for them to support her.
Ye Jianguo had the same thought. He wasn't sure how much money Tang Zhicheng had, but with both a wedding and a house purchase happening, he figured there couldn’t be much left. Their family’s financial situation wasn’t great either, with only Ye Zijun and Ye Fangfei as their two children. Since their son was already married, they only had this one daughter left. Giving her a little more in her dowry wouldn’t hurt.
“I think the same way. I’ll ask our daughter what style she likes later,” Ye Jianguo said. “We’re not too concerned about how many pieces of furniture there are; as long as our daughter likes it, we’ll fill the rooms for her.”
“I’ll talk to her about it later,” he added. “I still have to go to work tomorrow and check if there are any defective fabrics available. We need to prepare curtains and door drapes for the house. And we don’t even have any bedding for the kang! Oh dear, there isn’t enough cotton left; I’ll have to go find some more,” Hao Chunying mumbled about the things they were missing in the house.
Ye Jianguo didn’t pay her much mind and let Hao Chunying calculate things on her own. He stepped out to discuss how to arrange the house with Tang Zhicheng and the others.
“Let’s build the kitchen first; then we can cover the rest of the area with flooring to avoid muddy feet on rainy days,” Ye Fangfei suggested as she looked at the kitchen that had been built, noticing there wasn’t much space left in the yard.
“The inside needs a fresh coat of white paint too, and the windows need repainting,” she added.
Seeing his daughter making suggestions, Tang Zhicheng nodded in agreement, clearly pleased with her input. Taking advantage of a pause in their conversation, Ye Jianguo said, “I just discussed it with your mother. Since Xiao Tang has bought the house, we will cover the cost of the furniture inside.”
“You two can discuss what you need,” he continued. “We’re not too concerned about how many pieces there are; let’s just fill both rooms with whatever you think is best.”
Ye Fangfei never expected her parents to want to provide her with furniture. In this day and age, the preference for sons over daughters is rampant; most families simply do not keep the bride price. Yet here were Ye Jianguo and Hao Chunying, not only preparing bedding for their daughter but also giving her a substantial amount of money, even including a car as part of her dowry.
Now they wanted to furnish her entire home. This wasn’t just marrying off a daughter; it was more like what one would do for a son marrying a wife. Ye Fangfei felt deeply touched and decided that from now on, she would treat Ye Jianguo and Hao Chunying as her own biological parents, honoring them and ensuring they had a comfortable old age.
Although she would consider them her real parents, she didn’t want them to spend any more money on her. After all, there were still her brother and sister-in-law at home, and no daughter-in-law would appreciate her in-laws spending money on their sister-in-law.
To avoid any conflicts between her parents and her brother and sister-in-law, she firmly refused. “No need, Dad. Tang Zhicheng can handle the furniture.”
Tang Zhicheng immediately echoed, “No need, Dad. I’ll buy the furniture myself.”
He hadn’t expected Ye Jianguo to go this far for them. Even if Ye Jianguo's actions were primarily for his daughter’s sake, Tang Zhicheng felt equally grateful. He was immensely thankful to Uncle Fang for introducing him to such a wonderful family.
