The custom everyone agreed upon was that the elders of the family would go first. The younger ones would finish their own meals at home before heading over. It wasn't just that the cousins from Uncle Ye's side hadn't come; even the cousin from Aunt Hao's side was absent. Cousin Zhi Liao and his group would arrive shortly, which reassured Ye Fangfei. She quickly brushed her teeth and washed her face.
"Fangfei, come eat some dumplings so you won't be hungry during the wedding!" Aunt Hao called out when she saw Ye Fangfei.
"I'm coming!" Ye Fangfei replied, feeling a bit hungry herself. She entered the room and grabbed a bowl of dumplings to eat.
"Don't eat too much, or you'll have trouble in the restroom later," Gao Chunying said as she noticed her.
"Got it," Ye Fangfei responded.
In truth, even without Gao Chunying's warning, Ye Fangfei wouldn't have eaten too much. She understood that using the restroom during the wedding would be inconvenient. After finishing one dumpling, she set down her chopsticks.
"Not eating anymore, Fangfei?" Yi Xiaoli came in to clear the dishes.
"No, I'm done," Ye Fangfei said as she stood up to help her sister-in-law take the used dishes outside for washing.
"Oh dear, Fangfei, put that down! You're the bride today; you shouldn't be doing any work!" Aunt Hao hurried over to take the dishes from Ye Fangfei's hands.
"It's fine, Auntie. It's not that big of a deal," Ye Fangfei replied.
"Even so, you don’t need to help. There are plenty of people here; we can manage without you," Aunt Hao insisted.
"If you're free, go change into your dress and get yourself ready," Aunt Hao suggested.
"Yes, you don't need to worry about this; I’m here with your aunt," Aunt Ye chimed in.
With both Aunt Hao and Aunt Ye saying so, Ye Fangfei obediently went into the room to change. Just then, Aunt Ye arrived with her family.
"Did we arrive late? Have you all finished eating?" Aunt Ye asked upon seeing Aunt Hao and Aunt Ye washing dishes.
"Not at all! We saved some uncooked dumplings for you, Big Sister!" Gao Chunying replied.
Hao Chunying looked discontentedly at the large family behind Aunt Ye. However, considering that today was her daughter's special day, she held her tongue.
Aunt Ye didn’t mind Hao Chunying’s attitude. She turned to her daughter and daughter-in-law behind her and said, "What are you waiting for? Go boil the dumplings."
Honestly, what good are you two? You have no sense at all.
As Aunt Ye grumbled, she grabbed a handful of sunflower seeds and started to crack them open.
"Chunying, I heard you’re giving Feifei a bicycle as a dowry. Is that true?"
"I’m not saying you shouldn’t give her anything, but really, a girl like her doesn’t need a bicycle. Wouldn’t it be better to save that money for yourselves?" Aunt Ye continued to chatter away while munching on the seeds.
Hao Chunying had always found this sister-in-law annoying, but she forced herself to endure it today since it was her daughter’s big day.
However, Aunt Ye clearly didn’t know when to stop. "You’re just spoiling Feifei too much. Aren’t you worried that Zijun might have objections? You’ll need him to support you in your old age."
"And about the match you found for Feifei—I heard he’s from the countryside? You must be out of your minds. What good is a country bumpkin?"
"Just wait and see; soon enough, you’ll have a bunch of poor relatives from the countryside to deal with. You’ll regret it."
"Big Sister, the dumplings are ready. Why don’t you go eat some?" Hao Chunying said, forcing down her anger.
