"Is your wife tired and not eating well? Let me make her some hand-pulled noodles," said Old Lady Tang, a hint of irritation in her voice. "And what about me? I'm tired too, you know."
This was typical of Tang Zhi, the youngest son, and they were far from home. If they were back in their hometown, such remarks would have drawn a response from the eldest or the second son. Old Lady Tang decided she would give him a piece of her mind.
Tang Zhi truly hadn’t thought much about it. He had joined the army at a young age and had never seen how Old Lady Tang interacted with his two sisters-in-law. He didn’t realize that mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law often clashed. His attempts to defend Ye Fangfei in front of Old Lady Tang might stir up discontent.
Now that Old Lady Tang had pointed it out, he finally sensed her displeasure. "Mom, if you're tired, you should rest. I'll cook dinner tonight so you can taste my cooking," he quickly offered with a smile.
Though Old Lady Tang was still angry inside, this was her son whom she hadn’t seen in years. What could she do? She could only pinch her nose and concede, "Fine, fine. What can a grown man like you even cook?"
Tang Zhi knew she wouldn’t actually let him cook; in their family, men didn’t enter the kitchen. However, he wouldn’t bring that old-fashioned mindset into his life with Ye Fangfei.
"Mom, you’re still the best to me. You have to stay here for a few more days," he continued. "I haven’t tasted your cooking in years! I really want to eat your sweet and sour pork." Being doted on by his parents made him feel good, and he knew how to charm them.
Before long, just a few words from Tang Zhi had Old Lady Tang smiling brightly. She even forgot her intention to lecture him about being too good to his wife.
"Your mother’s cooking? That goes without saying! In our area, everyone knows how good it is," she beamed. "Want sweet and sour pork? Just wait; I’ll make it for you right now."
With that, Old Lady Tang hurried off to the kitchen.
Tang Zhiwen and Tang Zhiwu watched as their younger brother effortlessly cheered up their mother with just a few words. They couldn’t help but give him a thumbs-up.
This was typical of the third son; he could easily smooth things over with their mother when she was upset. If it were them, she would have chased them around with her shoe!
Not only that, if they dare to let me cook for their wives, I won't just scold my son; I'll scold their wives too. Comparing people is bound to lead to resentment, and they can't hold a candle to the Third.
Tang Zhi chuckled and went over to help his two brothers tidy up the yard.
Ye Fangfei slept soundly until five o'clock. It was only when Tang Zhi came in that she woke up to eat.
"Feifei, wake up. It's time for breakfast," Tang Zhi said gently, leaning close to her ear.
"Hmm, what time is it now?" Ye Fangfei asked, her eyes still half-closed.
"It's five o'clock. Mother has already prepared the meal," Tang Zhi replied, glancing at his watch.
As soon as she heard that Old Lady Tang had made breakfast, Ye Fangfei instantly woke up. "What? Mother has already made breakfast? Why didn't you wake me earlier?"
In a flurry, she tried to put on her shoes and get out of bed.
"There's no rush, no need to hurry," Tang Zhi said, gently pulling her back.
"What do you mean no rush? If Mother is cooking and I'm sleeping in, she'll definitely think I'm a lazy daughter-in-law!" Ye Fangfei exclaimed anxiously.
"Don't worry. Even if Mother has some opinions, you don't need to be concerned. After all, you still have me," Tang Zhi reassured her.
