"Feifei, what brings you here?"
Ye Fangfei was about to take Old Lady Tang upstairs when she heard a woman's voice. Turning around, she recognized a somewhat familiar face. After a moment of thought, she recalled that the woman in front of her was Hu Qiu Yue, her cousin's wife from her aunt's side, who worked at the department store.
"Big Sister-in-law, I brought my mother-in-law to take a look around," Ye Fangfei greeted her.
Hu Qiu Yue had already noticed the elderly lady beside Ye Fangfei but wasn't entirely sure. Now that Ye Fangfei had spoken, she quickly greeted the old lady, "Hello, Auntie. I'm Feifei's sister-in-law and work as a sales assistant here at the department store. Is there anything you would like to buy? Let me know if I can help!"
Hu Qiu Yue specifically mentioned her job as a sales assistant to show support for Ye Fangfei. After all, being a sales assistant was still considered respectable among the eight professions.
Old Lady Tang was clearly taken aback; she hadn't expected that Ye Fangfei had a relative working as a sales assistant. In their countryside, having such a relative was something to be proud of. Usually eloquent, Old Lady Tang felt somewhat lacking in confidence when facing someone like Hu Qiu Yue from Beijing.
"Hello, I'm just here to browse with Feifei; I don't plan on buying anything," Old Lady Tang replied.
Hu Qiu Yue didn't say much more after that; they exchanged pleasantries and moved on. She turned back to Ye Fangfei and said, "Feifei, you're just in time! I have a few pairs of Liberation shoes here that have some minor defects. Would you like them?"
Hearing this good news made Ye Fangfei's eyes light up. Although she didn't particularly like wearing them herself, she thought they would make great gifts for her father-in-law and Tang Zhiwu.
"Yes, I'll take them! I just don't know what sizes they are," Ye Fangfei quickly responded.
"They're all size 42 and 43. These are popular sizes; don't worry! The defects are just minor issues that you can't even see on the outside," Hu Qiu Yue whispered.
Ye Fangfei nodded and grasped Hu Qiu Yue's hand gratefully. "Thank you, Big Sister-in-law! I was just thinking about what gifts to bring back for my father-in-law and brother-in-law. You know I just got married and don't have much money left; you've really helped me out!"
"What are we to each other? Why are you being so polite?" Hu Qiu Yue feigned displeasure.
"Hehe, I know! You're just like my own sister-in-law," Ye Fangfei laughed as she replied.
Hu Qiuyue's kindness towards Ye Fangfei can be entirely attributed to her mother-in-law, Aunt Hao, who treats her niece exceptionally well. Aunt Hao has no daughters, so she dotes on her niece, Ye Fangfei. Her three sons have also followed suit, showing care for their cousin.
When it comes to Hu Qiuyue, she feels compelled to be good to Ye Fangfei out of respect for her mother-in-law and the men in her life. However, Hu Qiuyue has her own ulterior motives. Both Uncle Fang and Aunt Hao have jobs with decent salaries. Although marrying off three sons requires a significant amount of money, it is undeniable that Aunt Hao and her family must have saved a considerable amount over the years.
As a daughter-in-law, it is common to keep an eye on the family wealth of one's in-laws, and Hu Qiuyue is no exception. Moreover, since Aunt Hao's family has not yet divided their assets, Hu Qiuyue worries that when the time comes for division, Aunt Hao might favor her youngest son, leaving them at a disadvantage.
Therefore, while Hu Qiuyue is trying to present herself well in front of Aunt Hao at home, she also seeks to win favor with Aunt Hao by treating Ye Fangfei like a beloved daughter. Otherwise, why would she be so eager to give her those coveted liberation shoes? Hu Qiuyue's little schemes remain unknown to Ye Fangfei.
