Although ten yuan wasn't much, it was still not enough for Ye Fangfei to spend. Nevertheless, it held a certain significance. Ye Fangfei and Tang Laotai were dining at the state-run restaurant.
At home, Tang Zhicheng and the others didn't have such good fortune. By the time they returned home, it was nearly noon, and they had expected a delicious meal waiting for them. However, what greeted them was a locked door.
"Hey, where are Feifei and the others? What could they be doing?" Tang Zhicheng wondered aloud as he took out his keys to unlock the door.
He first went to check their room, and indeed, Ye Fangfei was not there.
"Third Brother, come take a look; your sister-in-law left you a note," called Tang Zhizhen from the living room.
Tang Zhicheng quickly walked over and took the note. It simply stated that she had taken Tang Laotai to the department store and wouldn’t be back for lunch. They were to figure out their own meal.
Tang Zhicheng read the note aloud.
The old men exchanged glances upon hearing its contents. "What are we going to do for lunch?"
Feeling downcast at not seeing his wife upon returning home, Tang Zhicheng's mood quickly shifted when he remembered that she was taking her mother to the state-run restaurant.
"Let’s go to the state-run restaurant too! We can all have lunch there," he suggested.
"Are we really going?" Tang Zhizhen and Tang Zhiwu were instantly excited. Even the old man looked eager.
They had never even been to the state-run restaurant in their hometown, let alone one in Beijing; how could they not be thrilled?
Time was running short, so Tang Zhicheng immediately led them straight to the state-run restaurant.
When they arrived, Ye Fangfei and her mother had just ordered their food, which was starting to arrive at their table.
Tang Zhicheng glanced around at the entrance of the restaurant and spotted Ye Fangfei sitting at a table directly facing him.
"Wife!" he called out, waving his hand towards her as she was about to pick up her chopsticks to eat.
She looked up and was surprised to see Tang Zhicheng and the old Tang man had arrived with them.
After confirming that Ye Fangfei and the others were here, Tang Zhicheng brought the old man and his two brothers inside.
"Wait, how did you guys get here?" Ye Fangfei asked, taken aback.
"We came to eat too. It’s no fun for us big men to eat alone when you two ladies aren’t home," Tang Zhicheng explained. "We just came from our parents' place and haven’t eaten at the state-run restaurant yet, so we thought we’d join you."
Ye Fangfei clicked her tongue in response. What else could she do? They were already here; it wasn’t like she could send them back.
However, with their arrival, it turned out they hadn’t ordered enough food.
“Dad, big brother, what do you want to eat? My mom and I ordered braised pork, Beijing-style shredded pork, and scallion lamb. You guys can order a few more dishes,” Ye Fangfei suggested.
“Just order whatever; we’ll eat anything,” Tang Zhiyuan said awkwardly.
Ever since they stepped into the spacious and bright state-run restaurant, they felt like they had nowhere to put their hands and feet.
Especially as the gazes of other diners in the restaurant occasionally swept over them, making them even more nervous.
