The next day, after sending off the old Tang man and his companions, Tang Zhicheng took Ye Fangfei with him to distribute wedding candies to the neighbors in the nearby courtyard.
Although their little courtyard was independent, it was essentially part of the larger courtyard next door. It was said that distant relatives were not as valuable as close neighbors, so it was important to establish good relationships early on. They were not very familiar with the people in the larger courtyard; they had only exchanged greetings while preparing their new home. After all, their renovations had caused quite a stir, and they wanted to avoid any complaints by giving a heads-up.
Now that their wedding was over, they brought some candies to share and hoped to get to know everyone better. This larger courtyard was slightly bigger than Ye Fangfei's family courtyard and housed seven households.
As Tang Zhicheng and Ye Fangfei entered, they noticed three older women sitting by the water pipe, washing clothes. Nearby, a few children were playing. Upon seeing them, Aunt Zhao, who had previously interacted with Tang Zhicheng, spoke up first. "Isn't this Little Tang? And this must be your wife? What brings you here?"
"Yes, this is my wife," he replied, then turned to Ye Fangfei. "Wife, this is Aunt Zhao. When we were renovating our house, we asked her to keep an eye on our things."
In this era, most people were quite honest, but there were still some petty thieves around. During their renovations, they had piles of red bricks and cement in the courtyard. Whenever Tang Zhicheng had to step out, he would ask Aunt Zhao and the others to help keep watch.
Ye Fangfei hadn’t realized this before and smiled even more sweetly at Aunt Zhao. "Hello! I'm Ye Fangfei. You can call me Little Ye or Feifei," she said warmly.
"Alright, I'll call you Little Ye then. What brings you here?" Aunt Zhao asked, noticing the bulging cloth bag in Ye Fangfei's hand, her eyes lighting up with curiosity.
"We got married the day before yesterday," Ye Fangfei explained. "Today we came to share some wedding candies with our neighbors. We’ll be living here from now on and hope everyone will take care of us."
Ye Fangfei spoke nicely and presented the wedding candies at just the right moment. She had made these candies herself and packed them in red paper bags filled with a mix of peanuts, sunflower seeds, and sugar cubes—about half a pound each.
Aunt Zhao took the red paper bag with a beaming smile that lit up her face. "You’re too kind! You even brought us wedding candies!"
The wedding candies had been prepared long ago, but due to the busyness of the past few days, it was only today that I found the time to come over, said Ye Fangfei.
Seeing that Aunt Zhao had received a bag of wedding candies, the two aunts who were washing clothes with her also gathered around.
"You're Xiao Ye, right? I'm your Aunt Wang. This is my home; we're just separated by a wall. If you ever need anything, feel free to come to me."
"And I'm the head of the household, Li Baoguo. You can call me Aunt Tian, but everyone just calls me Aunt Guihua."
Ye Fangfei quickly handed over the red paper bag and greeted the two aunts, saying, "Hello, Aunts! I'm still young, so if there's anything I don't understand in the future, please teach me."
Ye Fangfei was sweet-tongued; no matter what happened in the future, her words were pleasant to hear.
Aunt Wang and Aunt Guihua were indeed very pleased to hear this. They felt that this young daughter-in-law, Ye Fangfei, was polite and spoke well—quite unlike the new bride from the old Ji family.
