Ye Fangfei also learned that Zhao Danniang's husband was named Zhao Rongxiang, who worked as a workshop director at a food factory. They had two sons and one daughter together. The eldest son, Zhao Qingyang, and the younger son, Zhao Qingtao, both worked at the same factory. The daughter, Zhao Qingyun, graduated from high school two years ago and was facing the prospect of moving to the countryside.
To keep her daughter in the city, Zhao Danniang gave her job at the factory canteen to Zhao Qingyun. Aunt Wang's husband was named Liu Haisheng, who worked at a coal mine. They had two sons as well. The eldest son was married but did not live with them; instead, he stayed with his wife at her parents' home. The reasons for this arrangement were not elaborated on.
Their younger son was serving in the military and rarely returned home. Lastly, there was Aunt Gui who lived in the main house and was one of the earliest residents of the area. This house had been passed down from Li Baoguo's parents. In this large courtyard, aside from Ye Fangfei and her family, only Li Baoguo's family owned their house; all others were assigned by the factory.
Li Baoguo worked as a technician at a tractor factory, while Aunt Gui also had a job at the street office. Today happened to be her day off. They had four children: two boys and two girls. The eldest just started high school this year, while the youngest was in kindergarten.
Ye Fangfei chatted with Zhao Danniang and the others for an entire morning, not only getting to know who lived in the courtyard but also discovering that Zhao Danniang did not get along with Zhou Xiaoying and looked down on her. Aunt Gui had once had a quarrel with Han Shengnan. Li Xiaomei was known for being petty, which made everyone avoid her.
Zhou Xiaoying's three daughters were all timid and reserved, just like the pets she kept at home. As noon approached and it was time to prepare lunch, Ye Fangfei stood up and said to Aunt Zhao and the other two aunts, "I’ll head back now so I won’t delay your cooking. We can chat more when we have time."
Aunt Zhao and the others were happy to gossip with Ye Fangfei, especially since she was so engaging; she listened intently and occasionally asked questions.
"Alright, when we have time, let’s have a good chat," Aunt Zhao said as she also got up to return home to cook.
As for the laundry that wasn't finished, it could wait until the afternoon.
"Fangfei, I work at the street office. If you need anything, just come find me there." After their brief interaction, Aunt Gui had a very good impression of Ye Fangfei.
"Sure! If I need anything, I’ll definitely go to the street office to find Aunt Gui," Ye Fangfei replied.
When she returned home, Tang Zhicheng had already prepared the meal and was just waiting for her to come back and eat.
"You’re back? Wash your hands and come eat!" Tang Zhicheng said as he was about to go out to call her when Ye Fangfei walked in.
"Oh, the food is ready? What delicious dishes did you make?" Ye Fangfei was surprised that Tang Zhicheng had taken the initiative to cook.
"I can’t make much else; I steamed some steamed buns, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, and made a seaweed salad," Tang Zhicheng replied.
"It smells so good! I didn’t expect you to be such a good cook. I’m in for a treat from now on!" Ye Fangfei said as she popped a piece of egg into her mouth.
"It’s delicious; make sure to eat more later." Although Tang Zhicheng didn’t show much on his face, the corners of his lips betrayed his good mood.
"Thank you, dear! I promise I’ll eat more," Ye Fangfei suddenly rushed into Tang Zhicheng's arms and gave him a kiss.
Tang Zhicheng was taken aback by her kiss but quickly regained his composure and wrapped his arms around Ye Fangfei, kissing her back.
