"Mom, we're here!" Ye Fangfei exclaimed as she jumped off the back of the bicycle, spotting Hao Chunying waiting for them at the door.
"Mom," Tang Zhi also got off the bicycle.
"Hey," Hao Chunying replied, noticing the numerous items hanging from the bicycle's handlebars. With a pained expression, she asked, "Why did you buy more things? We have everything at home. Why spend this money?"
"Auntie, Auntie, did you buy me candy?" Ye Ting eagerly jumped up and down.
"I did! Not only candy, but I also got you some sweet rice strips and egg cakes," Ye Fangfei said, ruffling her nephew's hair.
"That's great! Auntie bought me candy! I knew Grandma and Auntie love me; what my grandmother said isn't true," Ye Ting said happily.
"Ye Ting, what nonsense are you talking?" Yi Xiaoli had just come out and overheard her son's words, scolding him sharply.
However, it was too late to stop it; both Hao Chunying and Ye Fangfei had heard.
Hao Chunying's expression immediately darkened.
She could accept that her grandson was not very close to them since he had been raised by his maternal grandmother. Although they provided financial support, the child was still young and didn't understand these matters.
But now that her grandson said such things, it was evident that his grandmother had been saying provocative things to him.
Yi Xiaoli realized her mother-in-law must be upset. She was also angry at her own mother for saying such nonsensical things to the child.
But that was her mother; what could she do?
She could only put on a smiling face and apologize to her mother-in-law. "Mom, don’t listen to Tingting’s nonsense."
Before she could finish speaking, Hao Chunying interrupted her. "Children don’t lie. Xiaoli, Tingting knows exactly what happened."
"You know very well that I initially wanted to hire someone to help take care of the child. It was your mother who said she had nothing to do and volunteered to help."
"But I haven’t treated her unfairly; I’ve been giving her money every month for taking care of the child."
"I haven't shortchanged her at all. To put it bluntly, if I were just looking for someone to help care for the child, I could find someone easily with money."
"It’s just that I thought it would be better for the child to be cared for by his own grandmother."
"And after all this time, have I ever complained about you taking our family's resources to support your family? How can your mother say such baseless things in front of the child?"
Hao Chunying was not known for her good temper; when she got angry, she didn't care who was in front of her—she would let loose with a barrage of words.
Yi Xiaoli's face turned crimson as she listened to Hao Chunying's scolding. If there had been a crack in the ground, she would have gladly slipped into it. "Mom, I'm sorry. I promise I'll talk to my mother," Yi Xiaoli stammered.
Hao Chunying considered that today was a joyous occasion for the girls and didn't want to ruin their mood. After a moment, she warned, "Let me tell you, from now on, you should take my grandson less to your mother's place. He's going to school now, and your mother won't be watching him. Just stop sending money back home."
Those words struck at the very heart of Yi Xiaoli's situation. Her family's financial condition was poor, and it was only with Yi Xiaoli's monthly support that they managed to get by. If her mother-in-law insisted on cutting off the funds, what would happen to her family?
"Mom, listen to me. My mother definitely didn't mean it," Yi Xiaoli said anxiously, trying to explain.
However, Hao Chunying interrupted her. "Enough! No more talking about this for now. We'll discuss your matters after Feifei and the others leave."
Yi Xiaoli understood that this wasn't the right time for such discussions and had to swallow her words for the moment. She needed to focus on entertaining her sister-in-law and brother-in-law.
"Feifei, Zhi, come inside! Your dad got up early this morning to buy a fish; we're having fish stew for lunch," Hao Chunying called out to her daughter and son-in-law.
Before they even stepped through the door, they could see Hao Chunying and Yi Xiaoli bickering, which made Ye Fangfei feel somewhat awkward.
