"Feifei, your room has been taken by your brother and the others. I've packed your things and put them in the room with your father," said Hao Chunying, unable to meet Ye Fangfei's gaze.
Ye Fangfei was taken aback; she hadn't expected that just three days after leaving home, she would return to find her room gone.
She stood there in shock while Tang Zhi, who had been chatting with Ye Zijun, quickly stopped talking and walked over to her.
"Oh, that's fine. I just wanted to pack my clothes and things that I can wear," Ye Fangfei said with a forced smile.
"Feifei, you..." Hao Chunying wanted to say something more but was swiftly interrupted by Ye Fangfei.
"It's fine, Mom. It's great that Brother and Sister-in-law have moved back; they can take care of you both."
"Aren't you going to stew fish? Come on, I'll help you," Ye Fangfei suggested.
Seeing her daughter like this made Hao Chunying feel a bit uneasy. She didn't actually think there was anything wrong with her son moving back and taking her daughter's room. After all, that room had originally been shared by both siblings.
When her son got married, it seemed inconvenient for him to share a room with his sister, even with a partition in place. They had decided to rent a place outside instead. Now that Ye Fangfei was married, it seemed only natural for her brother to move back.
Hao Chunying wasn't sure how to respond; although she felt justified in her reasoning, she couldn't shake off the guilt when speaking to her daughter.
As they entered the kitchen, Hao Chunying began cleaning the fish while Ye Fangfei squatted beside her, preparing vegetables.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. Ye Fangfei felt a twinge of discomfort about her brother and sister-in-law occupying her room. She understood that having a room of one's own at home was a rare privilege for daughters in families like theirs. In typical households, several children often shared one room. When a son got married, it was usually the daughter who made way for him. Families like theirs that allowed sons to rent their own places were indeed uncommon.
Most families would give their rooms to their sons, while their daughters would make do with a makeshift bed on the floor. Therefore, Ye Fangfei was not surprised by the decision made by Hao Chunying and her family. However, she was completely unprepared for the sudden announcement that she no longer had a room in this house. From now on, she would be entirely an outsider. This thought made her heart ache a little.
As she watched her daughter silently picking vegetables, Hao Chunying hesitated before speaking up. "Feifei, are you upset that we gave your room to your brother and his family?"
Ye Fangfei didn’t expect her mother to ask such a question, but she quickly replied, "No, Mom, why would you think that? I’m married now; it’s only natural for my brother to move back in. How could I be upset?"
"I actually planned to tidy up my things today and clear out the room," Ye Fangfei added.
She truly felt that way; now that she was married, it wouldn’t be right for her to occupy the room. Besides, it wasn’t a long-term solution for Ye Zijun and his family to rent a place outside; they would have to move back eventually. What surprised her was how eager they were to return, not even waiting for her three-day visit home before moving back in.
Although it felt a bit uncomfortable in her heart, she could still accept it. If Yuan were here and faced with such a situation, she didn’t know how he would feel. However, since things had already turned out this way, there was no point in saying more.
